Valyssa as a Child

WHO NAMED THEM/SIGNIFICANCE OF THEIR NAME:

Valyssa’s full name is VALYSSA ASHALANTARASYLNIN LAVELLAN. Yes, it’s a mouthful. She wasn’t named after anyone in particular, and in fact, her mother simply liked the name because of how it sounded.

Valyssa’s name doesn’t translate to anything in modern Dalish, it’s a historical name which can be loosely translated to “Memories” or “A place of memories”.

Ashalantarasylnin was her mother’s name. I headcanon Dalish elves often take their same-sex parent’s name for their middle name. (Her brother Verlen took their father’s name, Leanos, for instance).

HOME THEY GREW UP IN:

The Free Marches, usually around the forests and brooks. Far away enough so that even the most determined human troublemakers don’t ruin the clan’s day, but close enough to rural human settlements to trade with. Valyssa often felt the most comfortable among the tents and aravels. There was something romantic about the nomadic life her clan led, and she loved meeting new people and seeing new places.

RELATIONSHIP WITH PARENTS:

Valyssa got along swimmingly well with her parents. Her mother, Ashalantarasylnin (Ashala to friends) was a hunter in the clan, and her father, Leanos, was a gifted mage, second to their Keeper at the time.

Her parents had tried for a child for the longest time, but had no luck until they adopted Verlen. Shortly after, Valyssa was born. Many in the clan considered Verlen a lucky charm of sorts.

THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE THEM AS A CHILD:

Curious, playful, adventurous.

CHILDHOOD FRIEND(S):

Valyssa, despite her bright and optimistic nature, was always picked on. Many of the other children pranked her or made fun of her clumsy attempts at magic. So, she often stuck by Verlen’s side, who was only happy to have her along.

FAVORITE TOY:

An embarrassing stuffed Halla. It was made by the clan’s craftsmen, and till this day, she still has it. He’s worn and dirty and probably a little gross, but my god, does she love him.

CHILDHOOD TRAUMA?:

While her clan was friendly towards humans, many of the humans often distrusted the clans. One such event saw the clan packing up to leave, when they were confronted by a group of angry famers.

The farmers wrongly believed that the elves’ presence was the reason their crops had been failing and their animals were dying (it was simply the polluted water running in from the city, as well as the poor weather). 

Leanos, her father, bravely stood between the humans and the clan, he had attempted to broker some form of peace, believing there was no need for violence. However, that only angered the humans, they believed Leanos was belittling them, and tried to strike him down.

Leanos barely saw the sword coming at him, and barely managed to protect himself from the attack. The clan warriors and hunters gathered, as quickly as they could and fought back the humans, while the other members fled.

Till this day, this event has deeply troubled Valyssa. However, she believes it was brave of her father to battle cruel accusations with kindness, and it informed her of her future choices as Inquisitor. It may always be harder to be kinder, but ultimately, it is the right thing to do.

(Her brother, Verlen on the other hand? Felt his trust in humans were betrayed, and till this day, often spares very little of his time towards them).

HOBBIES:

Studying the Fade, it’s a fascination she’s had for as long as she could remember.

Reading old poetry or stories-- Valyssa believes that as the clan’s First, it’s her duty to be proactive in piecing together the missing history of the Dalish.

Gardening-- she’s no green thumb, but the act of gently caring for something until it bears fruit or vegetation is rewarding to her.

Travelling-- Valyssa is always interested in seeing new places and exploring them, and often won’t rest until she thinks she’s seen enough of a place to understand it.

CHILDHOOD FEAR(S):

The dark. She can’t quite explain it, but something about the deep, unknowing dark both frightens her and intrigues her. Still, she’d prefer sleeping next to the fire, or someplace that’s lit, even if dimly.

QUIRKS/FUN FACTS:

Valyssa is a ray of positivity and anyone in the Inquisition could tell you. She’s always ready to lend a helping hand or be a shoulder to cry on. Only Solas, Verlen and a few of her closest friends have seen her cry or vent her frustration.

If Valyssa can help it, she doesn’t like to start arguments or contradict her companions... to a degree. She’ll humor Morrigan’s knowledge on elvhen culture, but she draws the line at Blackwall lying to everyone.

Valyssa often believes kindness is given sparingly around Thedas, and makes it a point to be merciful when and where she can. While she disagreed with Blackwall’s methods, she allowed him to serve the Inquisition in order to give him a sense of purpose.

Valyssa is friendly to almost everyone in the Inquisition. Her closest companions? Cassandra, Varric and yes, Solas.

Valyssa returned Cole to his spirit form, it’s where he thrives best. While she wishes he was human, and more tangible, Cole is happiest as a spirit, and that’s all that matters to her.

Valyssa used to have VERY long hair and was incredibly proud of it. Before she left for the Conclave, her Keeper had asked, for her safety, to cut it off. Valyssa BAWLED as she sat on a stool while the others helped cut her hair to its current length.

After the main game, Valyssa allowed her hair to grow back, feeling safer in her position as the Inquisitor...

...After Trespasser though, it doesn’t take her long to cut it again. This time, she does it willingly.

She’s a notorious sweet tooth and loves anything so long as its smothered in honey and nuts and fruits.

SHYNESS

Part of you is gripped by the fear that you’ll launch into something and completely mess it up. The upside of this is wise caution: people are indeed often too rash, whereas you know, by instinct, that holding back can save you. Probably, you feel shame and self-disgust a bit too much. But when you do feel in your element, you act with a wisdom and sensitivity never found in people with thicker skins.

ORDERLINESS

You love it when everything is neat and tidy: when there is a proper way of doing things, and you can tick things off the to-do list and know where everything is. So others, at times, are to you unbearably sloppy and messy. And you run into things that can’t be ordered (a child, a partner, a colleague at work) which drives you slightly nuts. But your desire for order is a good one when it is focussed where it is needed and when you’re okay with a bit of mess.

RESILIENCE

You have a tendency, after a setback, to turn your emotions towards restriving. What attracts you is the idea of wiping out a humiliation by resumed action – overcoming weakness, repressing your fear. Because part of your motive is pride, you can sometimes be unwilling to admit weakness or to receive aid. But at heart, tour insistence on coming back and never folding has taught you a valuable pessimism: you know that important journeys are never easy.
