A foreign film from Sweden (but still gives THE LURE vibes) and it is very cold all the time, our main boy character constantly has a dripping nose. This movie is very touching in ways I wasn’t prepared for but really enjoyed. There were a little bit of weird special effects here and there but otherwise the film was killer. Recommended for a cozy horror movie night or just anytime you are feeling a foreign film with a heart of gold!
⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
The first five minutes are so jarring, you would think it would establish the scene but really I was more confused than when it started. A little blonde boy in his underwear is commanding something to squeal like a pig (while he brandishes a knife), two people arrive in a taxi, a gentleman covers his window with cardboard, while someone pisses in the snowy street. Our toe headed boy is Oskar and it turns out he was doing the weird knife stuff because he gets bullied at school.
We find out pretty much right away that Eli is going out and killing people but hers seems compulsive and necessary… ‘Cause she is some sort of vampire and her dad tries to do some killing for her but we only ever see him fail in this film. Also we figure out the title, because she is a classic vampire that needs to be welcomed somewhere before she is allowed in (story of my life). The father ends up having to sacrifice himself for his daughter (but what parent out there hasn’t, am I right ladies and gentleman? (and that is what we call pandering, haha, let me in)).
Back to our dynamic duo Eli tricks Oskar into inviting her in and she confirms that she can fly and that she can feel the cold which I always thought she could! “To flee is life, to linger is death.” She encourages Oskar to beat up his own bullies so he does just that! He is so proud he tries to become blood brothers with her but she freaks out because she can’t really control herself around blood or when she is hungry. We are treated to some very special special effects before she finds her next target, but again, her attacks seem so compulsive and she looks so upset afterwards.
Virginia is our hot blonde who gets away but not without a bite that turns her into a vamp so Ginny does the noble thing and asks her orderlies to open her blinds and WOOSH she is up in flames. Her boyfriend is distraught so he goes to look for Eli and finds her sleeping in the bathtub (very Kyle XY style) but Oskar warns her in time (he isn’t able to kill the man himself). We also find out if a vampire enters a domicile without proper invitation they start to bleed out of every hole in their body (gross!).
Eli leaves but somehow senses that Oskar is in danger because she comes back when the school bullies are literally about to drown him in a pool. It is really cool of her other than the whole ripping apart of 2-3 children. Cut to Oskar on a train with a big box in front of him, he taps morse code on the box and the box taps back (they had learned morse code earlier in the movie), how adorable of an ending. You think the title is referring to letting people or vampires into your home but really this film is about who you let into your heart and these two are best friends or soul mates or whatever you would like to call it. Total THE LURE vibes (Oskar is totally Silver while our girl Eli is Golden).
