do you have a favorite AU for bowspam?
I LOVE VAMPIRE/WEREWOLF BOWSPAM!!!! I've posted some art on this blog once or twice about it, and I also wrote a whole fic about it! I'd like to imagine all three of those are in the same continuity, with the fic coming first and then the drawings in order after that.
The reason I got so obsessed with it is that there's something to be said about the popular portrayals of both vampires and werewolves and how they relate to the way Dream treats Tommy in exile. In most vampire media I've witnessed, vampires are a very collected, rational, intelligent monster, passing as almost-human except for their bloodlust. Werewolf media, on the other hand, tends to portray werewolves as violent, feral, and animalistic. This dichotomy is especially present in media that contains both of them at the same time.
This contrast - specifically Dream leveraging this contrast against Tommy - is what is so fascinating to me. Dream, propping himself up as the intelligent and rational one compared to Tommy's troublemaking, which is characterized as violent and animalistic - despite the both of them being dangerous supernatural creatures - feels so perfectly in character to me. The hypocrisy, the manipulation, the othering of Tommy and berating him for behaviors that come naturally to him, it's all there.
Framing Tommy's behaviors as these animalistic problem behaviors allows Dream to weaponize that shame and self-hatred against him in various ways. The first art post I linked, where Dream calls Tommy 'uncivilized' in response to Tommy's threat to maul him, and the second art post I linked, where Tommy gets upset at Dream and scratches his face in retaliation (either for something he said or did) and Dream is furious - it's clear that Dream's provoked these issues (or. maybe not as clear in the scratching one but dream did provoke him there) and is actively turning Tommy's angry, imperfect responses against him so he can get away with shit! Like what a fucking paragon of DARVO am I right.
And that just paves the way for Dream to really cement that Tommy is someone who 1) behaves terribly, 2) cannot control it, 3) therefore someone else needs to be the one to manage these behaviors, and 4) of course it's Dream. The arbiter of Tommy's exile. The one who is so ~mature and collected~ by comparison.
There's a scene in the fic I linked - probably one of my favorite passages - that says this:
“Since you won’t do it yourself,” Dream mumbles. “And this is why you’re here. Because you won’t listen, and I have to do it for you.”
Tommy opens his mouth and then closes it again. His cheeks burn hot with embarrassment, and it feels like the pause before Dream starts unraveling the bandage lasts forever. Is Dream being pointed about his hand, or is Tommy just imagining things? He feels like he’s imagining things. He always is, lately.
Dream wraps the bandage tight around his hand, careful to avoid his claws. Tommy feels like an unruly child at the doctor’s office, scolded and held in place until the proper treatment can be given - which is ludicrous, given that he’s a grown man, but is also the primary reason his ears feel like they’re on fire. The bandage is secured, tugged to make sure, and then Tommy’s wrist is unceremoniously dropped.
It's this idea that gets into Tommy's head - and that Dream enforces - that Tommy needs to be disciplined and taken care of. It strips him of autonomy and puts Dream in total control. At the right angle, Dream can spin it as care and sweetness, responsibility and wisdom. And you know, there's probably some part of it that is a misguided attempt at "taming" these undesirable aspects of Tommy, trying to... domesticate the wolf in him. But at that point it's no longer Tommy - and that's the reason it doesn't work.
Anyways that's a lot of character analysis for an AU in which the other half of its appeal is that I can make Dream turn Tommy into his personal bloodbag-pincushion and also kiss him about it while Tommy gets to have fun werewolf xenoculture surrounding form-shifting and the cultural significance of full moons WHICH I DIDNT EVEN GET INTO OH MY GOD I could really go on forever about this couldn't I. Yes I have headcanons about werewolf culture that I've baked into the au too. i can't keep going because it's 3am now and i've been writing this post for two hours but on god send me asks about it again. sorry i yapped so much i REALLY love this au.
maybe i talk about doomsday-eve hookup au next
hear me out
had enough energy to do some mini pieces on them this month, if not ever- redesigning their AU outfits bc its fun and less brain thinking

Hello everyone!! Tiny update- unfortunately, Hellbound Guardian is likely going to remain on hiatus through March & April. I’ve been working away at finishing off my remaining commissions and with the impending release of Monster Hunter Rise, I don’t see myself having the time management skills to do my regular updates 🤪
When I catch some free time for drawing I’ve been spending it doodling ref sheets for vampwolf versions of Avery and Torei. Avery’s sheet is done already and can be peeped at my NSFW Twitter (which is nsfw) and Torei’s (above) is still in progress. I like how the color picture turned out though, here’s a closeup.
