Van Halen - Van Halen (1978)
Van Halen's debut album in 1978 was a game changer for rock music and music in general. No band sounded like Van Halen at the time, thanks to Eddie Van Halen's revolutionary guitar playing. The first Van Halen album might be the greatest rock debut album ever. (Appetite for Destruction and Montrose should also be in that debate) If it wasn't for Van Halen, disco might have lasted for many more years. (sorry disco fans!)
David Lee Roth gets slagged for his vocal ability, but I think those folks miss the point. It's Roth's swagger and attitude that complements the brilliant music. I don’t mind Sammy Hagar, but he doesn't match that DLR vibe, nobody can! The unsung hero of Van Halen is Michael Anthony. His backup vocals are amazing, so much so that he could easily sing lead on some songs. Actually, during the Hagar reunion tour in 2004, Anthony sang lead on Somebody Get Me a Doctor and it sounded great! And I can't forget Alex Van Halen who is one of the best rock drummers ever to play.
My faves: Runnin' With the Devil, Eruption, I'm the One, Atomic Punk, On Fire.
Greatest guitar solo ever, hands down is Eruption.
