Mediterraneo (1991). In WW2, an Italian Army unit of misfits occupies an isolated non-strategic Greek island for the duration of the war.
Oh, this film was so much more charming than I expected! A movie that ultimately asks what is a soldier when you take him out of his war, it’s a warm, funny and genuinely tender ode to community and the ways we connect to one another. Plus it’s beautiful shot, and carried by some lovely performances across the board. A really special little film, and I can’t believe I’d never even heard of it before! 8/10.
