Sometimes “vandalism” does zero damage, is 100% reversible, and makes a statement beyond its specific massage. In #Allston there has been this “art” (loosely applied term) installation along a long chain link fence. Some silly quote that someone thought “sounds deep,” but seemed reductive and lazy. Anodyne and condescending, it felt like what some committee figured “the young people would like.” Out of touch with the neighborhood where it sits, the series’s of bright yellow letters were apparently too tempting of a target. Whatever little punks figured out how to unbolt the letters and rearrange them are #RobinHood level heroes to me. Especially because they put their mischief to purpose. The Black Lives Matter efforts must avoid fatigue and being seen as a fad. This rearrangement of the art installation not only reflects a true message of our times, but stands to remind people this is far from finished. None of the letters from the original were stolen. None of the letters was damaged. If they REALLY want to revert this back to its original, bland, corny state they could. Zero loss. Zero damage. It’s the art of reparable #vanadalism. I will always have a love for Allston. Yep, that’s Donald Trump’s Walk of Fame star — or what’s left of it. Jamie Otis reportedly dressed as a construction worker and smashed the star with a "sledgehammer and pick-ax." Otis’ plan wasn’t to destroy the thing though, he had a more altruistic goal.
