He is eleven when he first sees her. Her chocolate frog escaped and she pursed her lips in a cute kind of way between angry and genuinely upset. He doesn’t know her name but he gives her his chocolate frog anyway and she smiles, bright and happy. Sirius is certain that her smile just light up the entire room and a part of him feels proud that he was the one to get her to smile like that.
She gives him a big kiss on the cheek before taking a hold of his hand, dragging him towards her compartment. She tells him her name is Emmeline and he presents himself as Sirius. She thanks him for the chocolate and smiles again. Sirius really likes her smile so he promises to make Emmeline smile as much as he can.
At twelve there are nights when he can’t sleep and she can’t sleep either. They find it funny when they almost crash against each other while walking in the dark common room. They end up talking for most part of the night, about everything and nothing, whispering secrets that no one else knows, pinky swearing that they won’t say a word about it.
Emmeline reads fairy tales to Sirius. Stories that he had never heard about in his life but that he instantly loves because Emmeline reads in a soft voice, resting her head on Sirius’ lap, her eyes filling with a childish wonder that makes him smile. A yawn escapes Emme’s lips and Sirius leans down to kiss her forehead and she promises she’ll finish the story in the morning. The first student to come down in the morning receives a glare from Sirius that clearly says that if someone wakes Emmeline, he’ll hex the crap out of them.
They miss their morning classes but they don’t really care.
It’s the middle of the winter and, in Sirius’ words, is cold as tits. The black lake’s surface is frozen and so, the students can ice skate is they wish too. Of course, Emmeline wants to and Sirius just can’t say no to those big bright eyes so he goes out with Emmeline, and skates with her, dong ridiculous things to make her laugh.
And of course, trying to be silly when skating isn’t the brightest idea and he ends up falling on his ass. Emmeline half laughs, half worries and when she leans down to see if Sirius is okay, he kisses her red nose, assuring that he s perfectly fine but when he tries to get up he lets out a little scream that says otherwise.
Turns out he sprained his wrist and twisted his ankle.
At fourteen, Valentine’s seems like a big deal for everyone, making them worry about dates and telling their crushes what they feel or buying them chocolates in secret. Sirius doesn’t worry about that, though. He doesn’t have a girlfriend, not does he want one. Emmeline is single as well and she isn’t freaking out about Valentine’s either so Sirius asks her out on a friend date. Not because he doesn’t think Emmeline isn’t pretty or kind or amazing enough to ask out on a proper date but because their relationship is not like that. She is his little sister, a girl he would do anything for, their bond is special and he knows it will last forever but it’s not romantic.
They go to Honeydukes and to drink tea surrounded by couples and balloons in shapes of hearts. They laugh, they eat tons of chocolates and red candy, holding hands just because they can. It’s a lovely day and when it’s tine for Emmeline to go to bed, Sirius takes her hand and kisses her knuckles ever so softly before wishing her goodnight.
They are fifteen and the summer is about to begin. Sirius doesn’t want to go home, things are more and more tense every day at Grimmund place and he has a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. Emmeline hugs him tight when he tells her what is going on through his mind and tells him that, no matter what, she would be there for him and that she will love him always.
Sirius feels incredibly grateful and he hugs his friend tight. He whispers an ‘I love you’ into her ear and she whispers an ‘I know’ into his, making him laugh. Then he kisses her lips gently, just a quick peck before pulling away.
They go buy chocolate frogs and forget about their troubles.
