Waving to the couple as they got into their car, Lily smiled to herself as she recalled the events of the day. It sounded like the winery was definitely their frontrunner for their summer nuptials, and luckily their date was still available. Instead of jumping into her own car and heading home for the weekend, Lily instead turned around and went back into the building where she knew Nicolas Casillas was waiting for her. Although they did not exactly grow up closely together due to their age gap, their parents’ connections allowed for an adulthood friendship to blossom upon both of their return to the small town they called home.
“Good news, I may have booked the final Saturday you have free for August 2021,” Lily announced as she joined the man in the area he’d designated for the tasting session. She was lucky that the Casillas family thought so highly of her both personally and professionally, and because of that she was able to get certain perks around the winery. Nodding approvingly at the set up that the director of winemaking had clearly thought through, the woman listened intently as he described the various offerings that she was getting a sneak peek into. As much as she knew the man was a hard worker and as dedicated to his job as she was to hers, she nonetheless appreciated him going the extra mile.
“I’ll try not to,” the brunette replied to his quip about the rosé wine, arguably the one that Lily would go for instantly in the warmer months. But as it was the holiday season, she found herself gravitating towards the reds. “Let me try the spiced ones first then, and I’ll let you know if I will be taking you up on your offer,” was the response before delicately picking up the glass of the anticipated novelty selection, gracefully taking a sip and letting the flavor settle in her mouth. “Citrus and… cinnamon?” she guessed of the notes, wondering if she was on the right track and hoping she didn’t offend Nicolas. “But you’re right, it certainly is something. You’ve outdone yourself yet again, and I said that for the fall selection.” A pause lingered in the air as she considered the option he’d given her, although Lily Whittaker truly did not need to think on it - how could she refuse? “Yes, I’ll gladly accept a half case sent to my place, I moved into my own home so I’ll text you my new address,” she replied enthusiastically, sure that Nicolas was well aware of the events surrounding the Whittaker family as of late - at least, the publicized information. “I think I’ll order some for the wedding, it’s just too good to pass up for such a special day,” Lily mused, quickly providing clarification. “Not my wedding, of course. My best friend’s, I’m the planner and maid of honor for her, so I guess it is almost as though it is my own with the amount of effort I’m putting into it. Trust me, if it was indeed my wedding, you would’ve received an invitation as soon as we sent them out.” Drumming her fingers on the table momentarily, brown eyes predictably drifted to the glass of rosé. “As expected, I’m gonna try this one next. What about you?”
“The last—” He cuts himself off with a chuckle that tumbles from his lips, smiling as he shakes his head ruefully. With the Casillas Vineyards + Winery being the largest winery in the state, he shouldn’t be surprised by such a statement. Weekends filled up quickly (especially those in the warmest months of the year), and considering that August was only about eight months away give or take, the couple that she had to have booked were more than lucky to be able to snag that date. “Well, good for them. And, good for the both of us. Thank you for thinking of this place so highly that you continue to recommend it to your clients.” It’s a formality, if anything, since he’s the Casillas that she’s speaking with at this very moment. Victor and Elena, or his siblings would have said the same thing to her, but being that he considered her more of a friend than business partner, he especially means it.
At her guess, he nods in lieu of a verbal response, quick to finish off the morsel of prosciutto and cheese that he’d taken a bite of while she’d begun to taste what he’d had brought out for her. “Cinnamon and citrus peels, yes. Cloves, too.” It wasn’t as sweet as he would like, although of course he would always be his own worst critic when it came down to it, and the tannins didn’t quite hit the mark that he was going for when it came to this blend of wine and spices. But, of course he’d never tell a customer that. No, it was perfect for a spiced wine for the holiday season. Nicolas would just have to try again next year to attempt what he was going for.
“I’m glad you like it. I’ll have it packed up and sent over as soon as we have the address,” He smiles, although he does raise his brows when she mentions ‘the wedding’. Surely she can’t be talking about the wedding for next fall? Nic’s eyes smooth over to her hand briefly looking for confirm that she wasn’t engaged (if she was, then the matter of who and how the hell he missed the engagement announcement were certainly questions to accompany an immediate congratulations), and not seeing a ring, he waits for her to elaborate and isn’t left waiting long, as her explanation is quick appear. Wedding planner and maid of honour, Lily must have her hands full with this wedding— but of course, as an event planner it isn’t something he imagines she can’t handle. “You had me worried for a moment there,” He teases lightly. “I nearly thought I’d missed an announcement or social media post somewhere. And if I had, well, the only way I’d be able to make up for that disaster would be to offer you the venue and wines free of charge. But, of course, I can have cases set aside before the Market this weekend. How many were you thinking?”
When she asks what he’ll be drinking, he picks up his glass, swirling the crimson liquid within it before he nods at the bottle at the end of the table. “The other spiced wine. We made more of this one, so it won’t be limited to this winter. It’s a full-bodied red, sweet and can be served warm or even over ice in the summer with apple, cinnamon, vanilla, and oak as the main notes.” With his attention back to her and the rosé, however, Nicolas points out one of the chocolates on the platter before setting a piece into his mouth himself. “This bourbon pecan chocolate goes well with that rosé, by the way.”
