Hats off to those who spend the extra $/effort to keep Vancouver Architectural History alive ~> CRAFTSMAN STYLE (1905 - 1930): derivation of The Arts & Crafts Movement (early 20th C.) Style Advantageous ~> Contagious: * "Arts in a Kit of Parts" - builders could take on without an Architect, * generally used locally sourced materials - wood. * Customized components + pre-fabricated sections were readily available using catalogues such as Sears, Montgomery Wards and Aladdin. * promoted simplicity with clean lines and evoked strength & quality in how the exterior components were placed. * Style's popularity spanning a 20-year period, several variations of Craftsman houses developed, three particular to Vancouver. * Traditional Craftsman * Vancouver Craftsman * Craftsman Bungalow * Open flexible design allowed the individual influence of each builder based on budgets & changes in taste over time ~> allowed adaptations in layout to suit both large & small lots in neighbourhoods across the city. FORM * tended to be set on smaller urban lots. * covered porches were either full width a predominant feature. DETAILS * Flared or squared porch posts framed the porch . * lower sections of porch posts were any combination of stone, concrete imitation of stone, brick or rough stucco. * porch was framed by a low-set balustrade, * stairs leading up to porch tended to be narrower * Roof Gable ends featured exposed soffits with large brackets (either single vertical post or with fancier diagonal “knee brackets”), * roof overhangs & exposed rafter “tails” plus wood detailing known as “dentils” along horizontal banding * Windows often double-hung with leaded or stained glass transom, * Stained glass was generally limited to piano windows on side walls, * Front door often had a window inset in the upper portion (transom) with sidelights (optional). MATERIALS * Reflecting local sources, most common material: wood. * Cladding: shingles on main body with lap siding covering lower portion. Stucco & divider boards used as accent in front gables. #craftsman #craftsmanstyle #craftsmanhome #heritagehouse #vancouvernoir #vancouverhistory #vancouverbynite (at Kitsilano)
