The day was marked with a few congratulations since early at dawn. The Chancellor of the Dominion had many a quirky habits his niece, Serah, had grown accustomed to ever since he took the child under his care. Khalia was an early riser, on his feet without the first rays of sunlight having made an appearance yet, and the woman of bloodred hair sort of ingrained in herself that routine as well. Today, nevertheless, the Chancellor knocked on her door while she was still in bed.
Indulging in the vicissitudes of a birthday, choosing to remain abed for an extra hour or two, raising from the warm mattress solely to open the door and greet uncle Khalia, who brought good wishes and a present with him; he prayed the blessings of the Vermilion Crystal would reach Crosseyra for yet another year, pressing a kiss to her forehead.
Two hours later, they knocked on her door again. The Ice Reaper delivered a small cake as a birthday present and chose to have breakfast with the former princess before his labors began with Class Zero; his monstrous companion tagged along, as usual. Tea and bread and eggs and milk, with a slice of vanilla cake.
An hour past midday, however, one more visitor showed up at her door. To hide the glint of endearment in those pale-blue eyes of hers was futile for the mere second it lived. Even then, it seemed a waste of efforts to hide those feelings for Crosseyra was sure the cadet had noticed them, however, she reveled in that charade anyway, standing as the only shield that could protect her from the embarrassment.
'Ace'... That was all she managed to spell, cut short by his rushed greetings and goodbyes. The girl blinked twice, tads and bits of confusion washing over her visage, and hands took the small box hesitatingly for she struggled to find any words at all to say. "Tha... Thank you, you should't have..."
Finishing that sentence... was perhaps asking too much of his time, because Ace took his leave almost immediately.
The sigh that abandoned her lips resonated with the click of the door being closed. He remembered, that's what counts, Crosseyra thought, inspecting the wrapped box in delicate fingers. Such a petite thing, much sobriety in the enveloping, had to just pull from one end of the blue lace to have it undone.
Digits caressed the exquisitely forged charms for a very, very, long time; if she rubbed it hard enough, long enough, perhaps it'd grant her a wish, any wish, thought the girl. It took her mind off the note and the pretty handwriting on it. More importantly, off the words and the sense behind them.
She had forgotten her place in this world, yes, however, this was the painful reminder long overdue.
Crosseyra, in her wishful thinking, wanted to take comfort in the small chance their time together was enjoyable for both, a memory he could visit every now and then, if nostalgia or boredom ever allowed it. Deep down, she knew that wasn't the case.
Her eyes followed the chirping of a nightingale in the terrace, singing.
She took a deep breath, deep enough to fill her lungs with life again, and with life she felt the sadness that left her crying alone.
Ace ( @vancreux ) / Happy Birthday, Cross ✨
