An open letter to: Azealia Banks, The Cynic by George.

Hatred comes in many forms - jealousy, religious differences, gender inequality, social class and many more. It is one of our biggest downfalls as human beings. It seems that many of us focus on the negative aspects of this existence and wonder why things don’t go better for themselves. I was no different. I used to think the world was out to get me and that I was being dealt a shitty hand in life. Sometimes a shitty upbringing allows a motivated and ambitious individual to see the world from a perspective that many do not receive. But life is truly what you make it. I’ve realized that ‘hating’ others for having things that you do not (whether they earned it or not doesn’t matter) is only a detriment to your well being and potential, an aspect of what the Australian’s call “Tall Poppy Syndrome”, which I believe you are currently suffering from. You are a talented lyricist. Put all of this energy on wax and help us lead the people into the next decade.

It seems you have a chip on your shoulder. The only time I see you being covered by the press is when you’re rambling on Twitter about how you’re personally offended by comments and actions made by others. What you cannot control is others actions. What you can control is yours. Although your standpoint is often supporting social equalities, your approach does not seem to be working and is violent and aggressive in nature. Nobody responds well to being threatened Azealia. We understand you are upset with the world and want to make serious changes to it. Many of us want the same thing as you.

The beautiful thing about being an artist is that we are the voice of the people We help articulate how we all feel as a culture at certain moments through life. Music helps people through their days. Our job is to highlight the things we feel are wrong with this world, but also to imagine solutions which are only absorbed from the ether from people like us...people who think outside of the box, go against norms and push our culture forward. We must find ways to inject positive messages in songs that make people feel like there is no hope. Your twitter rants add more negative narrative to an already negative world. Perhaps in your growth, you can find it in your heart to forgive people for the faults you see and rather than exploit them for it or make them feel inadequate, you can offer solutions and lead this world by example. You are an artist. Don’t forget how many young people look up to you. Don’t forget that you can help them change the world. You are one person. But you have a voice where thousands of people tune in to, so please use it wisely. Although I’m a white man working hard at solidifying my name in a black culture, I am sensitive to both sides of the coin and understand that our people have caused great divides in our society. But many of us are trying to fix it. Make it a human problem, not a specific communities problem. We are all one. Peace & Love.
