Batalla en el lago helado de Vänern

Recogida en el poema de Beowulf y otras sagas nórdicas, no es de extrañar que esta batalla tenga un alto componente legendario.

Según se cuenta, este acontecimiento tuvo lugar en el siglo VI, como consecuencia del enfrentamiento entre los hijos del fallecido Ohthere, rey de Suecia, y su tío Onela quien había usurpado el trono.

Los hijos de Ohthere pidieron ayuda al rey Heardred de Götaland, pero Onela aprovechó su movimiento para matar dos pájaros de un tiro: al rey y a uno de los hijos de su hermano. 

Beowulf, sobrino del rey de Göatland, decide ayudar a al hijo superviviente de Ohthere para acabar con su enemigo en común. Se dice que Onela encontró por fin la muerte tras una épica batalla en las aguas heladas de Vänern a manos de su sobrino, quien venció y tomó el yelmo, la cota de malla y el caballo del vencido.
