D&D Character Ask

I’m the DM. There’s an NPC with the party. They love her. Tagged by @wildrosemage for Vanifer. To everyone else, @briary​ @dreaming-in-static​ @fereldengreywardens​ @mayabadcat​, have fun.

1. How many dead parents do they have?

Two. Next question.

2. How good are they at tongue twisters?

Vanifer’s charismatic and gives a great speech, but she hates wordplay and word games with a burning passion.

3. Biggest regret?

Vanifer was given Tinderstrike as a gift. She doesn’t think the old pasha who gave it to her knew what it was. She had a feeling that it was fate, and it was, but it doesn’t mean she didn’t regret the day she accepted it for the rest of her life.

4. Are they formally trained or have they gone through a more organic learning experience for their skillset?

Her training as a dancer was gained when she was very young—too young. Her sorcerous power was always inside her, but Imix’s whispers stoked the fires within her. The rest is all experience.

5. If they could hang out with one famous person in 18th century American History, who would they want to hang out with?

On a technicality, Jefferson in the 19th century. They’d talk abolition. She’d yell at him about still owning slaves while writing legislation about trying to free them.

7. What fictional character are they most like? Was this an intentional or accidental influence?

I’m honestly drawing a blank on this one. She’s very much the Well-Justified Extremist trope, though.

8. Paper or plastic?

Plastic’s more convenient; you can reuse it as a garbage bag later. Also it melts instead of burning.

9. What’s their dump stat?

Strength. She’s not built for a straight-up brawl. She doesn’t want to be anywhere near a fight, but if she has to be, she’s going to be ducking and weaving and making quick, magical strikes.

10. What’s their best stat?

Charisma. She’s a charming person when she’s not being influenced by Imix’s evil and her oratory is inspired. Also she needs it to cast spells but ya know.

11. What is their favorite anime?

She doesn’t really watch anime but she hates Pokémon with a passion. Sometimes she watches Wichaeta’s shonen over her shoulder and gets really nitpicky about how implausible the action is, and to a (much lesser extent) how skimpy the ladies’ costumes are. She keeps getting halfway through Record of Lodoss War and getting distracted by work.

12. What’s their favorite beverage?

Hot mulled cider. With way too much spice poured in because her taste buds are mostly burned off.

13. If they can use magic, what’s their favorite spell?

Fireball, fireball, fireball!!! Or when she’s feeling a little more subtle, dominate person. 

14. Most heroic thing they have ever done?

Throwing away Tinderstrike.

15. Most despicable thing they have ever done?

Vanifer escaped from the Court of Seven Sultans in the City of Brass when she was 14, on the same night that she was given Tinderstrike as a gift. As soon as she snuck out of the walls, she stopped at the bottom, climbed back up, and murdered each and every person in the palace. 

16. Are they a hero or a supporting protagonist?

Villain -> Supporting -> ????

17. What’s their favorite food?

Anything served in a place where the air is thick with hookah smoke. Kababs are good. Pita with way too much hummus is also good.

18. Would they rather fight a hundred duck-sized horses, or one horse-sized duck?

If a duck-sized horse is a Tiny creature and all one hundred of them were in a 40-foot radius, then they all go down with a single fireball. 

19. They have to go live on a deserted island. They can take one thing and one person. What do they take?

Bastian and a knife. >:|

20. Are they religious? If so, what god or gods do they serve?

She did lead a cult once. Now, she’s looking for a cleaner faith.

21. How did they become an adventurer?

She was inspired by her enemies’ heroics, and was also a liiitle smitten with one of them. And a whole lot of guilt.

22. Most amazing monster they have ever killed or helped kill?

Definitely the slaad-infested gold dragon.

23. Thoughts on death?

She’d rather die than be a slave again. It doesn’t matter to whom.

24. Do they have any interesting skills?

Vanifer’s a room-quieting dancer... but she’s an absolutely atrocious partner dancer. She’s not used to it at all. She also has a killer singing voice, but hasn’t sung since she escaped from the City of Brass. After being forced to sing for others, she’s not very comfortable singing for anyone other than herself, and Imix was never one for ballads.

25. Favorite animal?

When she was a little kid, she had a pet cobra named Goldie. She hasn’t spent enough time around animals since then; most of her time has been on elemental planes or deep in dwarven cities building evil cults.

26. Expansion of civilization or the preservation of nature?

Nature. Fuck civilization.

27. They’re at a tavern. They bump into a big burly angry drunk with a combative attitude. What happens?

"Do you wanna go? Faielle, hold my drink.”

She has to be restrained from incinerating him.

28. What do they do between quests?

Vanifer hasn’t really had the opportunity to take some downtime. She desperately needs it, though. Whenever she lies down she feels huge knots in her back and her skin is all scarred up from quick cure spells. What she really wants is to take a trip to the mountains and feel the snow melt as she walks in it.

29. Biggest positive and negative influences on their life and development?

She can’t choose if the Seven Sultans or Imix were worse. Probably Imix, but he’s almost too apocalyptically evil to count. The biggest positive influence on her life has been the party. She wishes she had Kaia’s patience and gentleness. She loves Faielle’s attitude (and curves). She thinks Jeb is the most down-to-earth person she’s ever met. Lelith is too adorable and funny for Vanifer to handle, and she thinks Wichaeta is so cool and mysterious.

30. Would they smooch a ghost?

Yes, she has. And no, she won’t talk about it.
