Canada has two national animals - one is the moose that everyone would know, the other is the North American beaver. Their history in this country has been an important one for trade, indeed one could argue that large parts of Canada would not have ended up where it was today without this humble animal, but their numbers were severely depressed during the fur-trapping period. Slowly they are returning to local lakes and ponds, though not without local government bylaws and property developers getting in the way.
