Vappuaatto or May Day Eve in Helsinki. We put a hat (a student cap) on a statue, then on our own heads, drink sima (a drink made from sugar, lemon, yeast and raisins) and hang out wearing student overalls. So don’t panic if you’re visiting Finland during May Day and suddenly a hoard of people wearing weird hats appears. They’re just celebrating.
