Jordan Road Restaurant & Bar

The Jordan road restaurant & bar in China is designed by architecture bureau CAA. The main concept of this place is that here meet together Chinese “bamboo weaving” elements and western “Arch” structure. Interesting 

This sketch will help you with understanding the construction of the cafe. There are structure analysis, structure frame and internal space itself.

I would like to show you some interesting details, which are in the design of the bar. For example, walls, which are made of brick, have their own concept and order. Look at this sketch and photo of wall -you can understand the structure by visual demonstration.

Or on these next two photos - this is how made the corners of the Jordan road bar & cafe.

This makes the effect of movable of brick, so we can see how they move from one point and position to another.

Book Mountain

Book Mountain is a Library in the Netherlands, designed by MVRDV in 2012. It is about 9.000 m2 and includes library, chess club, an auditorium, meeting rooms, environmental education center, retail space and some offices. Due to the glassy facade, all shelves with books are visible from the outside, and the shape of the library reminds the traditional farmhouses - thats why it looks like the mountain of books.

Tiers of pyramid are formed by specific spaces like auditorium and seminar rooms. On the terrace zones is the library itself to take advantage of the light and space provided by the glass roof. 

On the peak of the mountain is cafe offering panoramic views for visitors. For connecting the building to its historical context a lot of brick was used, covering floor, ceiling and doors. Higher book shelves which are out of field of vision divide the library’s archive and borrowing collections.

The interesting thing is that staircases for reaching book from higher shelves are situated on the facade of the building, fixed on the metal frame. And talking about materials - here were used wood, brick, glass and metal.

Also there are a lot of place where people can read books, talk to their friend, work on computers and so on. 

In spite of glassy facade, which bring a lot of sunlight to the building, there are a lot of lighters in the library, letting you read books not only in daytime, but in evenings too.

Tretyakov Gallery. Part 1

Our new project was about Tretyakov gallery on Krymskiy Val. At first stage we were working in groups and I was working with lana1svetlana and lusine-araqelyan. We had to research everything inside and outside the gallery and come to several problems, which should be solved.

First of all, we started to research the location of the gallery, try to find out what advantages and disadvantages does it have. We made a lot of different diagrams, which I will show you, and which show the situation of the gallery.

Just general information about the museum - where it is located, what is near it, how people reach it, how mane time do people spend on getting to the museum and so one.

This diagram illustrates several institutions like Tretyakov Gallery, such as Pushkin Museum, Polytechnic Museum, Garage Museum and several more, and where they are situated.

This one shows several nearest metro station to the gallery. So we can see that the closest stations are Octyabrskaya and Park Kulturi - its about 15 minutes to get to the museum from here, and on the second place there are Polyanka and Kropotkinskaya stations - about 20 minutes.

Electrotheatre  “Stanislavsky”

During our study we have to visit several architecture bureaus. One of them, lucky us, was Wowhaus. Unfortunately, their bureau is too small to invite such big group, as our is, so we met representative of Wowhaus in Electrotheatre “Stanislavsky”. The bureau reconstructed the theatre in 2013-2014. The main aim for architects was to make usable for troupe each centimeter, not destroying the historical value of building.

Main concept of “Electrotheatre” was transformation of spaces. Portable barriers let separate technical zones from public zones, so if it is needed - they can be twisted. 

Also the combination of materials, which bureau used during the reconstruction is unusual enough - a lot of thing were made by copper: pipes, skin plates, even on the floor was terrazzo with copper between its parts. Wood has also a great role in reconstruction and used almost everywhere. Of course architects left many historical things and did not touch them - like stairs, moulding and railings.

I liked a lot the ceiling on the ground floor - how Wowhaus add lighters, how they decide to make it black in such a place like theatre. I also liked the movable of this place - just with pushing these partition walls you can make a big empty and clean space from the several corridors. And even these simple metal frames on walls are amazing.

MAXXI: Museum of XXI Century Arts

One of the most attractive and most popular national museums of contemporary art in the world is MAXXI Museum, designed by two greatest architects - Zaha Hadid and Patrik Schumacher in 1998-2009, in Rome, Italy. Total size of this building is about 30.000 m2, exhibition space -10.000 m2,  and interior space is a little bit more than 20.000 m2.

The building is a composition of bending oblong tubes, overlapping, intersecting and piling over each other, resembling a piece of massive transport infrastructure. MAXXI includes in itself 2 museums: “MAXXI art” and “MAXXI architecture”, auditorium, library, bookshop, cafeteria. The large square in front is used for different live events.

“The walls of the MAXXI create major streams and minorstreams. The major streams are the galleries, and theminor streams are the connections and the bridges.” Zaha Hadid

 All these big empty spaces between exhibition and other zones are used for different events: people from museum make some performances for visitors, so they can stand and look at it or just pass over it. Also these spaces are used by visitors themselves for preparing for something.Also for visitors there are a lot of sitting zones almost everywhere - under the stairs, along corridors and so on.

In this museum I like the combination of smooth lines of staircases with straight beams and some crossbars on the ceiling, combination of black and white colors, combination of materials. Also the way architects used the light in spaces.

Building Study of Boathouse of TYN Tegnestue

One of the tasks of our C&CS lectures was to make a series of drawings of building, that we liked. I choose the Boathouse of TYN Tegnestue, which is situated in Norway, built in 2011. This is a small boat house, which used to be a store for boats and fishing gear. It has simple shape, but at the same time a lot of interesting details, like small and tall windows.

I liked the simplicity of this building and the way how materials were used. Like other boathouses, a lot of wood were used in it, and this I also liked.

Here is my section through facade drawing in 1:100 scale with some trees, just to let you understand the sizes of this small building. 

Here is the same section, but at another scale, 1:20, showing some small details. Here we can see how the construction is made, how beams connect to each other and the structure of doors on the right side.

This hand-drawing shows how the building sticks to the ground, in 1:5 scale. We can see either metal screws, or wood, or concrete, or wooden flourishing, or 20mm wooden beams. 

And the last hand-drawing, that I would like to show, is perspective, which is made with watercolors.
