Sex sells, which is obvious if you look at the cover to most any paperback. Other editions of this Vardis Fisher historical novel also focus on this exact scene from the novel: the half-naked white woman, raised by native people as in the roughly contemporary novel and film The Searchers, surprised by the sudden appearance of the white hero. Compare the first cover with the second, which belongs to an earlier Pocket Books printing. It’s the same character, same scene, and same "nubile savage" trope.
