My J Michael Tatum Story (Matt Mercer is in there a bit too)

I need to vent, also nothing against him, I love him and I think he’s great.

So, me and my dad have this family curse thing. We’re scarily good at picking out actors and actresses. Any movie, any show and I’ll hear a voice, or see a face and it’s either an immediate recognition, or a itch at the back of mind I need to check, and sure enough, that one guy who says one line in whatever obscure sci-fi show my dad’s watching this week, was in an episode of ICarly or something.

I’m really good at faces. I’m still getting better with voice actors, but it’s coming along ever since I got into anime.

J. Michael Tatum is voice actor I first learned about in roughly 2014, when I started to really truly get into anime and finally watched Black Butler. I’ve never been picky with subs and dubs, so I just rolled with the dub and like every other girl, immediately found Sebastian attractive, and unknowing ultra cataloging Tatum’s voice in my brain.

One day, I’m home sick with a 24-hour bug, I decide to go back and watch my favorite comedy anime, Ouran High School Host Club. Some of you already know where this is going. I sit down and listen, and listen and hey! Is that Sebby coming out Kyoya? Do a quick search and yep, there he is, J Michael Tatum.

This was there very first in a series of incidents which I like it call Stage 1 of Voice Actor Recognition Expectation Syndrome or VARES.

Stage 1: is going back to a bunch of favorites only to suddenly recognize a voice actor that you definitely didn’t before.

This happened with OHSHC, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and my gateway anime, Soul Eater.

Stage 2: is going back to watch a series in dub only to discover the voice actor is in those too.

This happened with Kamisama Kiss and Hetalia, but most notably, my all time favorite (until recently), which led to the downward spiral of stage 3, Attack On Titan.

I finally sat down to watch the dubbed version of AOT. Bryce Papenbrook right off the bat (told you I was getting better at voice actors), so he did a pretty good job of portraying really angry 15 year old. Next important character question? Is Levi still hot? Yep (we’ll get back to that can of worms later). Finally, the most important question... Is Erwin still my favorite? The answer a resounding yeesssss..... Mother fucker is that J Michael Tatum again? *deep sigh* Welp I still like him so, whatever I guess.

This is about when full blown VARES starts,

Stage 3: start something new, only for voice actor to pop out under a fucking rock and be in freakin everything I swear he’s watching me. Basically, at this point you expect them to be in everything you watch

Finally, I took a break from anime for about a year or so. I came back to all this hype for what is now my new favorite anime of all time, My Hero Academia. Two episodes in and Muthafuka is back, and I care way less than I used to.....

because Matt Mercer is the new bane of my existence.

In case y’all are wondering, I am willing to do a part 2 about Mercer. Also IMDB is my best fudging friend. Also willing to make this a long post if needed.
