I tried to make sprites of my LoK OCs that would fit in Ascendance.

How old is Variel?

Here's my math work and theory on approximately how old I believe Variel is and some other fun details like his birth date, join date for the astral claws, and his join date for the Night Lords (First Claw).

I highly encourage discussions on my posts, so please comment!! I'd love to hear all of yall's thoughts on this and if I missed any major points on this. This will be put under the cut for length.

Facts we know about Variel from the Night Lords trilogy:

Variel witnessed the genetic mutations of his chapter’s gene seed personally - he’s the head researcher.

He’s Apothecary Secundus. He’s Experienced.

He easily took down two neophytes without a scratch on him and managed to mutiny the Red Corsairs’s alive. 

Variel was around long enough to see Huron fall before his corruption.

He’s stated doing 78 surgeries on Huron.

Variel's Age and Timeline:

M35 - Astral Claws Chapter founded

M41 697 - 780 - Huron becomes Chapter Master. (Variel was around long enough to see Huron before his surgeries. These are his potential join-dates for the Astral Claws.)

M41 901 - 913 - Badab War. (Variel fought in this war.)

M41 999 - 13th Crusade (The First Claw’s/8th legion’s conference happens right before/at the start of this. Variel is present at this conference.)

Minimum age 999 - 780 = 219 years old at youngest

(13th Crusade conference - latest join date for Variel)

Maximum age 999 - 697 = 302 years old at oldest

(13th Crusade conference - soonest join date for Variel)

Variel is between 219 - 302 years old. 

Variel's Birth Year:

General SM age facts:

100-150 is kinda middle aged for a space marine.

200-400 is veterency

Minimum age for Neophyte Astartes is early-mid 20s.

Variel’s Training timeline:

0 - 10 (10 years) years old before becoming inducted as an Astartes

15 (5 years) Undergoing surgeries

25 - 45 (10 - 30) years Scout training

35 - 55 (10) years training for Apothecary

35 - 55 years from Birth to Apothecary

913 - 35 = 878 M41 possible birth year of Variel at the youngest age. 

913 - 55 = 858 M41 birth date of Variel at oldest age

Variel's birth year is between M41 858 - 878.

Approximate Years Variel joined First Claw:

13th Crusade M41 999 / Night Lord Conference Meeting

Decimus’ Timeline:

 (1 year) Grace year for Variel’s arrival to First Claw

(10 years) (Birth - Age 10) Birth of decimus/Begins surgeries and training

(5 years) (Age 10-15) Decimus’ SM Surgeries

(10 - 30 years) Decimus’ scout training

(5 - 10 years) Decimus’ meeting with Night Lords before 13th Crusade M41 999

31 - 56 years old - Decimus’ age

999 - 56 = 943

999 - 31 = 968

M41 943 - 963 Approximately when Variel joined First Claw.

How often Variel has to "Tune Up" Huron:

Huron gets worked on every 4-5 months. 

Variel works on him between 913 (When Huron got injured) - 943 (when Variel left for First Claw). That’s 30 years. 

30 years x 12 months = 360 months

360 months / 78 Variel Surgeries = Every 4 - 5 months Huron gets worked on. Variel worked on Huron’s Surgeries for 30 years.

Why 78 surgeries? Because Variel kept track and said this was his 78th time fixing Huron in the book (right before he mutinies to 1st claw.)

M41 913 -  943 (Variel’s job start date and the time he leaves the Red Corsairs)

Huron needed medical treatment “in a matter of months” - quote from the book.

30 years working with Huron = 360 months / 78 tune ups = every 4.5 months. 4.5 months aligns with “in a matter of months”. 

Random Headcanons:

Variel is a veteran rank and is a well experienced Astartes. Thus older than most of his peers. I’d give him an extra century for veteran status alone.

Variel has been around long enough to have deeply been a part of the Astral Claws Chapter before their fall.

His outfit and colors are a Wip, but his name is Variel and he’s….interesting when it comes to his “job” (he traps, sells and breeds humans for blood. And having his own harem of girls)

Even Cambriel’s neurotic ass finds him creepy as he feigns friendliness and tries to “befriend” humans to come with him, and…yeah. Bad things happen.

Variel spat acid onto his brother's armour, where it began to eat into the clenched fist icon of the Red Corsairs.

'I assure you, that was unintentionally symbolic,' he told the doomed warrior, and pulled the trigger."

I've had nasty brain rot over this man and have lots of unposted/unfinished content of him. This is Variel the Flayer during his time in the Astral Claws chapter, before the Badab War. I have theories that he really despised what his chapter turned into after the Badab War. More on that soon.
