Three. I'm Sorry
Pop-up Visits
Jermaine
Two Days Later.
I wasted no more time and decided to go see her. It made no sense to procrastinate anyway, had it not been me to make the first move there is no way we'd be here right now.
Parking my car in front of the Brownstone apartment I've known all too well I sat back in my car thinking about what's going to take place. I can only hope that she will accept me with open arms but I know for a fact that won't happen.
My leaving damaged her, and not only that life for her didn't get any easier. When I lost my mom she was there with me, there for me everyday. She couldn't count on me to do the same for her and I'll always feel awful for that.
Breathing out I pulled my keys out, opened my door and trekked upstairs we'd all make a habit too chill on every summer. I really did miss this place when gone and I'm more then happy to be back. Ringing the doorbell I took a step back and waited patiently for the door to be opened.
"Hey Jay," Jordyn smiled stepping to the side, the day we saw each other I expected the worst reaction from her and Brittany but they welcomed me back with smiles on their face and for that I was happy.
"Wussup Jordy. She here?" I asked her she nodded. "She's upstairs," she answered closing the door.
"Jor who was that at the do-" Nay stopped mid sentence and sent me a hard glare. "Jermaine," she called out I chuckled shaking my head.
"Wussup Nay Nay?" I asked placing a small smile on my face as she walked up to me and wrapped her arms around me. I smiled shaking my head as we shared a hug.
I've always considered Nay a little sister and always protected her like I was her big brother. We were real close, she came to me with anything, and besides Jordy and of course Lena she had my back through whatever. She may have been years younger then us but it was always fun to have her around when we could.
"I missed you Jay," she mumbled looking up at me. "I missed you too," I smiled looking down at her.
"Lena knows you're here?" I shook my head no. "She hadn't answered any of my calls so I called Brittany she told me to come over here," I informed her.
"I'll go get her," she said before walking away. "You want anything to drink?" Jordy asked me. I shook my head no as I sat down on the couch waiting patiently for her to come downstairs.
"I have to get ready for work Nay, whose down here?" She asked I breathed out and stood to my feet.
"Just come on," Nay spoke I stepped out the living room and we immediately made eye contact. She stopped in her tracks placing a shocked expression on her face that quickly turned to anger.
While she was angry I was happy. She looked the same, nothing about her had changed. "Damn," I mumbled taking in her features and everything else about her.
"Wussup lil bit?" I asked she shook her head. "What are you doing here Jermaine?" she asked coldly I sighed rubbing the back of my neck.
"I found out you was back in New York so I came too see you," I shrugged she sucked her teeth. "Well I don't want too see you, so you can leave and never come back at that," she spat walking in the kitchen. I let out a frustrated sigh and followed after her.
Though it got on my nerves I missed this attitude of her's. As of right now everything that used to annoy me about her I missed. I missed everything about her. Lena could be very stubborn at times, and really only I knew how to deal with it. So she should know I'm not going anywhere until we talk.
"Lena," she froze at the sound of my voice and turned around slowly. "Jermaine I don't want to do this right now," she said lowly.
"Do what?" I asked her. "Catch up. Act like none of this happened, pretend to be happy to see you and welcome you with open arms," she sighed.
"So you're not happy too see me?" I questioned she rolled her eyes hard as hell and threw her hair in a curly bun at the top of her head.
"Should I be? You left me, left everyone. When I needed you, you wasn't here for me, like I was there for you. You never called me not once, just to tell me you're okay, tell me where you were. I was your girlfriend or did you forget that? I was there for you, by your side. So no I'm not happy to see you right now Jermaine," she gritted. Walking past me I grabbed her arm lightly and pulled her into me.
"I'm sorry about that Lena, you know I am but I had to leave. You left too though right? And we left for the same reasons right?" I paused looking deep into her eyes.
"Don't do that Jermaine. We didn't leave for the same reasons, I don't even know why you left. I left because I couldn't take New York anymore," she paused as her voice cracked.
"I couldn't take it anymore. Upon my boyfriend leaving me for whatever reason my mother left me too. Family? Those relationships took a turn for the worst, and yes my friends were here for me but really I wanted you here. Just to say everything would be okay even though I knew at that time things weren't," she said as the tears fell from her eyes.
"But I guess that's my fault though, I depended on you to be there when I should have known you wouldn't. Lena is always there for everyone but when she needs somebody no one is around," she spat pulling away from me.
"Welcome back Jermaine," she threw me a fake smile and ran back upstairs.
"Want me to back and get her?" Nay asked me I shook my head no. "Nah, just give her a minute to cool off Nay. I'll be back though," I said leaving the house.
That's not how I expected things to go although I knew she'd be mad at me. I didn't expect to here all those things, nor did I know she felt like that. I don't exactly know how I'm going to fix this but I know I have to, I gotta get her back too. ***
"She's shocked too see you if anything Jay. This is a lot to take in, just give her time to accept this," Kendrick said I cocked my head back raising my eyebrow giving him a confused look.
"Accept what?" I questioned he shook his head. "The fact that your ass is back. It took a while but Lena convinced herself she would never see you again that's why when she was out in Cali she dated that Trey nigga," he said
"How you know she was in Cali? Thought your ass ain't know where she was," I said he waved me off.
"When I found out Lena was back I went to catch up with my old homey. She ain't mad at me," he shrugged I waved him off placing what was left of my blunt into the ash tray and stood too my feet.
"Where you headed?" he asked me. "Go see my uncle nigga, why you rolling?" I asked him he nodded.
"Yea man I have to go see him anyway, how you think I make a living. That 9-5 ain't cutting it," he said I chuckled shaking my head as we left his apartment.
That's the reason I was going to see my uncle in the first place. I wasn't about working this 9-5 bullshit either, in all honestly that don't amount to shit especially living in New York. I made a promise to my mom and while I'm going back to what she hated I just need money, while I'm back out here for good. Music will be my main focus though, I'm not giving that up for nothing I'm determined to make it. ___
"Wussup Unc," I said while dapping him. "We was about to have a meeting. Glad you boys could make it," he said sitting down after dapping Kendrick.
"They ready," I heard from behind me turning around I chuckled looking at Lena's uncle.
"I know that ain't Jermaine sitting right there," he smiled I laughed getting out my seat as he pulled me into a brotherly hug.
"How you been?" he asked me I breathed out shaking my head.
"I been good, what about you?" I asked him. "Life could be better but I'm living," he answered I nodded sitting back in my seat.
"What's really wrong with you?" my uncle asked me. "What you mean?" I questioned
"You just look stressed the fuck out," he said pulling a Cuban cigar out his cigar box. "I just came back from seeing Lena that's all and she hates my guts," I shrugged.
"Lena?" Uncle Dre questioned in a confused tone I nodded. "Yea, you didn't know she came back to New York?" I asked he shook his head no.
"I don't really know much about Lena anymore, we ain't on good terms I guess you could say," he said I was shocked to here that. For what I remember Lena and her Uncle used to be real close, I'm talking best friends so this is a shock.
"I'm sorry to hear that," I said he waved me off. "It won't be this way forever trust me. Lena is stubborn as hell, so I'll give her time before going too see her." he said I nodded as the conversation switched to a different topic.
"Why you here though Jay?" my uncle asked me. "Work," I said he shook his head no. "Your mother turning in her grave just cause you're sitting here right now," he said I laughed a bit.
"Look I don't want to work at no regular ass job Unc. If you not gon have me out here on these streets have me behind the scenes at least," I said he nodded.
"What about music?" he asked me. "I'm about to start working on that. Whenever this clown takes me to the studio," I said pointing to Kendrick he waved me off.
"Your ass ain't tell me when you want to go," Kendrick said my uncle laughed a bit but nodded. "Come on, meet the crew," he instructed as we followed him and Uncle Dre into another room.
Time to start working again.
Leandra
Grabbing my mascara I stomped my way into the bathroom to get ready for work. I really hope that Jermaine didn't walk in here and think that I was going to jump in his arms and all would be forgiven. That's not how things work, and if he thought it was he knows other wise.
Letting out a frustrated sigh I held my head back to stop the tears so that my eyeliner wouldn't run. Had I known I'd be crying today waterproof make up would work.
"Lena," Brittany called out softly I sighed focusing back on the mirror.
"I honestly don't want to talk about it Bri," I mumbled opening the Revlon tube of Lash Potion.
"You have too though, you can't just keep these things inside," she stretched I rolled my eyes shaking my head.
"Well that's how I cope so just let me get ready for work please," I gritted she sucked her teeth.
"It's going on 10pm Lena. Where do you work at this late?" she asked folding her arms over her chest.
"Don't worry about it Bri," I smiled turning off the light walking out the bathroom.
"I'm always going to worry about you Lena. Just tell me it's legal," I chuckled shaking my head.
"It's legal Brit," I said grabbing my bag.
"Do not shut him out. You're really all he's been asking for since his ass returned, and you can front all you want Lena but I know better," she said
"We know better," Nay & Jordy called out. "Shut up," I said as we bust out laughing. After letting them know I'd be back by the time their sleep, Bri gave me her car keys and I jetted off to the club.
Bri was right, I do miss him like crazy and I honestly have no idea what the future is about to bring us. He can say he missed me but how do I know a girl is not sitting at home with him right now that he's deeply in love with? He could just be coming to me to patch things up and have us back at friends again. But I don't want that.
This whole situation is surreal to me because while in California I met Trey and he was a cool dude. We were friends that slowly turned into more, and in order for me to move on I had to face the fact that I would never see Jay again. But even with doing that I couldn't be with Trey, he just wasn't doing it for me, he wasn't Jermaine.
I hate the fact that this is my reality, I lost my mom and right after lost my boyfriend. Then the close knit relationship I once had with my uncle quickly died down after finding out things leading to my moms death. I used to be happy with my life, now I'm just over it. If it wasn't for Nay and her well being I wouldn't even be here. But I want what's best for her and that no matter what happens she's good. I'm very over protective of her no matter how old she gets I'll always be that way.
"Ms. Lena," I chuckled looking up at Phil.
"Hey Phil," I smiled as he held the door open for me. "Sean I will knock your ass out," I heard Cherry yell as I walked behind the bar. I would go put my stuff in the back but the way I'm feeling I can't deal with those girls tonight.
"Sean what are you doing?" I asked pouring a shot of Patron. "Nothing, her ass is just extra violent for no damn reason," he said shaking his head. I chuckled placing the glass to my lips and shook my body as the drink burned the back of my throat.
"Patron shots? What's wrong?" Sean asked me. "Your boy showed up at my house today," I said
"Word? How that go?" he asked me.
"Patron shots," I answered.
"It wasn't that bad was it?" I nodded
"It's like he just expected me to jump in his arms and everything would go back to normal. I've been mad at him since the day he left," I stressed downing my fourth and last shot.
"Don't drink your problems away Lena," Cherry said pulling the bottle away from me.
"I'm not. It's just on top of everything else going on in my life I have to deal with this. Although I do miss him like crazy I was finally okay with the fact that I'd never see him again," I paused now looking dead in Sean's face.
"But you had to ruin it," I pointed at him he waved me off.
"I prepared you Lena. Shit would of been worst had he just popped up so thank me. You act like you wouldn't have seen him or somebody else besides me wouldn't have told you," he paused laughing a little.
"We have the same damn friends," he said I shrugged. "So, I still do believe us not seeing each other could have happened," I said
"Now you know damn well that wouldn't have happened Lena," Cherry said. The same night Seam told me about Jay's return I filled her in. Yes we had just met but Cherry makes you that comfortable to just open up to her, besides I was out of it the whole night. I had too tell her what was up with me.
"Well it played out in my head perfectly," I shrugged. "And Sean whatever you do me working here does not leave your mouth when talking to Jermaine, because then he'll tell Uncle Nas who will either come drag my ass out of here or just tell your dad," I said using air quotes referring to my Uncle Dre
"And I don't need that," I finished.
Jermaine's uncle acted as my own, in his words I was the daughter he always wished to have and the perfect girl his nephew could ever fall in love with. And I was thankful to have him in my life without a doubt. I looked to him as a second father. Being as how my biological Uncle had a hand in raising me.
Though he and I aren't on good terms right now I love my Uncle Dre. It's just the decisions he made in life never did sit well with me, and the fact that it had something to do with my moms death upset me to the point where I want nothing to do with him.
"I'm not going to tell anybody although I should just tell my pops," he mimicked my air quotes. Cherry and I laughed at him.
"But if I know Jay like I know I do he'll show his face here a couple times so I'll be sure to give you the day off when he does," he said I smiled.
"See this is why I love you Sean," he waved me off.
"Don't think this is a way to avoid him Lena. Just because I'm doing this doesn't mean I won't help him when he wants to talk to you or see you," he paused.
"You're mad him yes but you love him. Sometimes love out weighs all the bad and hurtful shit Lena. Don't loose him, or shut him out cause you're mad at him," he preached I nodded running my fingers through my hair.
"Okay enough of these Dr. Sean moments," he cackled he does know how to ruin a moment.
"Get ready the club gon open soon. Cherry you dancing tonight?" he asked her she shrugged.
"I'm liking bar work with Lena," she smiled he shrugged.
"Whatever," he said walking away.
"You okay?" Cherry asked I breathed out nodding. "I'm fine," I smiled taking my jacket off. Time to service a busy night. ***
"That dress would go perfect with these shoes Bri," I said looking over at her.
I'm taking two different majors in school. Focusing on video directing and the styling & designing of a fashionista in simpler terms. So my homework assignment right now is putting together five different spring outfits. With the help of my future fashion model.
"It does look like nice with the dress but the jeans are better with a nice flannel shirt or even a crop," she said.
"That's so basic," I said as the doorbell rang.
"You're closer to the door," I said looking at her.
"But you're closer to the floor," she laughed as the doorbell rang again.
"Wow," I laughed getting off the couch walking to the door.
I sighed once fully opening the door. Honestly with these pop up visits though.
Two. News To Me.
Who's Back?
Brittany
To say I'm happy would be an understatement. I've missed my cousin so much, and for her to actually be sitting here in my car with me right now is so surreal. I may be a little over the top but that's how I feel. Been my day one since day one ain't no denying that.
"I want too see Nay," I said looking over at Lena she smiled shaking her head. "Then let's go pick her up, I told her too come downstairs in like five minutes. We're not too far from my apartment," she said I nodded. After she gave me the address I zoomed to her house. I was surprised too see that she was living in the projects, not that anything is wrong with it. It was just a shock.
"I fucking hate these damn people and I only been here a day. What makes it even worse is the fact that half the people that live in these damn projects are people I went too school with before we moved. I'm not even trying to be around them," she complained I bust out laughing mainly because she hadn't exactly noticed me yet.
"Don't laugh Brit it's no-. Oh my gosh," she yelled running up to me. "My boo, I missed you Nay," I smiled. "I missed you too," she said as we all got back in my car, once I drove off she started to complain again. I really missed these moments.
"Can't you find us another apartment too live in Lena, that's not going to make the cut man," she grumbled. "Well you know money is short so make do," Lena shrugged. I wasn't even about to spend my happiness on their homecoming hearing them argue.
"Just move in with me," I said. "Um are you not living with your dad and Aunty Tanya?" she asked I rolled my eyes shaking my head. I'm not even about to get into that just yet. "No I'm not, you mean too tell me you didn't notice the change? They moved out, I kept the house. They live in a bomb ass condo downtown. I'm too attached too that place to have it sold to somebody else so I kept it. I have three extra rooms that nobody sleeps in, why not have y'all live there rent free," I added wiggling my eyebrows together which made Lena laugh.
"You cool with that Nay?" Lena asked she nodding with a big smile on her face. "I really am happy to be back," Lena chuckled as I drove too chipotle. This has to be the best present I done received in a long time and it's not even my birthday. ***
"So you're saying you don't want too see them?" I asked as we sat in what is now Nay's bedroom. "It's not that I don't want too see them Brittany, it's just. I don't know," she stressed letting out a deep sigh.
"What are you afraid of?" Nay asked her, she shook her head. "It's not that I'm afraid, it will bring back memories I don't want too relive," she confessed I shook my head.
"You can't avoid your friends because of Jermaine Lena, I wasn't lying when I said they miss you. Jordy and Kenny was talking about you the other day and please don't even get me started on Sean," I said as we shared a laugh.
"I saw him earlier so I might just have a clue," she said I smiled shaking my head. "Where's Jordyn anyway?" she asked me I shrugged. "Probably at the studio with Kenny, I'm supposed to go over there a little later, want too come?" I asked her she shook her head no. "Not yet at least, as a matter fact call Jordy I miss her," I smiled while grabbing my phone.
"Refrain from telling anybody else please Brittany," she stressed. I laughed only because she stressed it like that for a reason. She knows I'll run back and tell them in a heart beat, if she didn't tell me she saw Sean earlier, I was going to call him myself.
"I won't tell anybody else, but don't make it be too long that you make your presence known Lena," I warned she nodded. "Just give me like three days the most," she chuckled laying back on the bed.
Three days is all I'm giving her. If she doesn't let anyone else close to her know she's here, I'm bringing them too her. I understand why she's a little hesitant but their our friends, our family as much as their his.
In a weird way I wish Jermaine would just come back because I know how much Lena loves him. She may be happy too be back but she's miserable, and there's only one person who can fix it and it's him. That would take a miracle though, nobody has seen or heard from Jermaine in four years so while I wish for his return I know it won't happen. ***
"Kenny ain't throw a fit you left right?" I asked once closing the door she shook her head no. "He left anyway, he was going to tell me to come with him but you called," she said I raised my eyebrow. "Who did he go see?" she shrugged.
"All I know is he went to Ray's pizza," I nodded. "What you call me over here for? Where is my surprise?" she asked I chuckled pointing upstairs. "What's up there Bri?" she asked the doorbell had rung meaning the food was here.
"Go see," I said opening the door. I laughed as she ran upstairs. "How much?" I asked opening my wallet. "25 dolla," I nodded handing him an even thirty and closed the door behind me. We had just ate a few hours ago and I'm still hungry as hell. Hearing the screams I shook my head walking in the kitchen to grab some plates, cups and forks.
"I feel like I should be mad at you Lena but I missed your ass so much," Jordyn said once I walked in the room. "I wouldn't be mad if you were Jor. I missed you too though, catch me up," Lena smiled
I'm happy to have these moments back.
Jermaine
"Let me get that uh, barbecue chicken slice right there baby girl," I said looking up from the glass making eye contact with her. She sent me a small smile then placed the slice in the oven.
"Anything else?" she asked me. "Y'all ain't got no orange crush?" she shook her head no.
"Just grape & strawberry," she answered I huffed shrugging. "Just give me the strawberry one," she nodded walking towards the freezer and placed the bottle on the counter.
"That shit is nasty," I heard from behind me. Chuckling I turned around to face this clown.
"What up baby?" I smiled pulling him into a brotherly hug. "Nothing much man living, what's up with you though? Where you been?" he asked me I thanked the lady and grabbed my pizza as we went to sit down.
"I went back to the Ville man," I paused shrugging. "I needed to find myself, I don't know what was going on with me but I couldn't stay here," he nodded. "I understand bro, what brings you back?"
"I always knew I'd be back you know so here I am. Where Jordy at though?" he chuckled. "Man as soon as I was about too tell her come on Brittany called her so she dipped. It's for the better though, you must have thought I was joking but Jor will really beat your ass if she sees you," he said I waved him off shaking my head.
"What's up with you and Brittany though?" he placed a big smile on his face. "Going strong for three years now,"
"Word? She finally gave you the time of day huh?" I joked. "Fuck you man, you got a girl? I mean you have been gone for six years," he sighed.
"Na, I been single this whole time. I may have left her here but she came with me man," he shook his head while staring me down.
"What?" I questioned. "You selfish man that's what. You really thought after four years shit was going to be all good?" he gritted I was taken back by his reaction. A couple minutes ago everything was all good.
"That's not how you made it seem a few minutes ago though," I retorted back. "Cause' you called like everything was good nigga. You's a selfish ass nigga Jermaine," he spat standing to his feet.
"How the fuck am I selfish?" he chuckled shaking his head.
"How are you selfish? We were all there for you while we were grieving too or do you not remember that? You left with no warning, ain't ever call not once and you expect for everything to be normal right now?" he questioned in disbelief.
"I understand I was wrong for leaving Ken and I'm sorry for that. But I needed it, I needed to get away. I went about it the wrong way though and I take that, you gon punish me forever for that though?" I paused shaking my head.
"If I stayed all I would have done was distance myself from everybody, all I wanted was my mom back and nobody could do that for me," he slowly sat back down across from me.
"I was tired of hearing the I'm sorry's, and she's in a better place. That wasn't doing nothing for me can you really fault me for that?"
"All I'm saying is you could of spoke up," he said I nodded opening my soda. After taking a sip I scrunched my face up shaking my head. "This shit is nasty man," he bust out laughing.
"I told your dumbass," he said shaking his head. "We cool?" he nodded. "We always been cool, I just been waiting to go in on your ass since you left," he laughed.
"What about Brit though? She hear from Lena?" I asked him he nodded. "She talk's to her from time to time. Brit knows where she is but Lena doesn't want anybody to know," he said shaking his head, I nodded.
"This how I know both y'all mother fuckers belong together. Just up and leave when something is wrong," he said I waved him off.
"How was she though? You know before she left?"
"She was distant, real distant. And when her mom died she just lost it. In all honesty bro all she wanted was for you to be there. When she left she tried to move on, I remember Brit telling me about some dude named Trey. But they ain't even work out," he shrugged I nodded.
Hearing that hurt. Had I known Ms. Taylor had died I would have been on first flight back. But with me not keeping in contact with everybody back home that's my ow fault. If I ever see Lena again, I can't even be mad at the fact that she probably hates me.
"Maybe when Jordy and Brit finally forgive you, we can give her a call or something, have y'all speak," he said I shook my head no. "If Brit and Jordy is mad at me, you really think Lena is going to want to hear my voice after all these years?" he shrugged.
"That I don't have the answer for man. You have to figure all that on your own," he said standing to his feet.
That I know.
Next Day
"You hit up Sean?" I shook my head no. "What he up too?" I asked bending my head slightly as I placed my chain on.
"He opened his club like last year, I'm about to check that fool right now. You rolling?" I nodded. "Yea let's go," I said grabbing my keys as we walked out my apartment building and too my car.
After talking to Kendrick last night I realized that my decision was a little selfish but until someone is actually in my shoes they won't understand what this feels like. Only person who can really relate is Lena, and while I know she hates me, at the same time I hope she can forgive me. She did the same thing I did, it's just she kept in contact. I didn't.
"I'm on my way now geez," I swear that voice sounds so familiar. Turning around I saw a very familiar face and did a double take only for the girl to walk by me quickly. I stood there staring at her back as she disappeared into the busy street for like 10 seconds before hearing Kendrick call my name.
"Yo! I been calling you for like mad long fuck is wrong with you?" he asked I pointed. "Yo that girl look like Lanay," I said. "Who?" he asked confused. "Nay. Lena's little sister," I elaborated he waved me off.
"You loosing it, you think if that was Nay she wouldn't have stopped? I know you miss Lena bro, I'm going too see if Brit can call her for real cause you're bugging," he said I waved him off and got in my car.
"You tell them I'm back?" he shook his head no. "I'll let you do that," he shrugged as I drove off.
"You not that far. I'll direct you from here," he grumbled turning the radio on. ***
"What up nigga?" Sean smiled dapping me I looked around his club and was impressed. From since I've known Sean owning a strip club has always been his dream, now it's his reality.
"When you get back?" he questioned. "A few days ago," I answered he nodded.
"Wait so you was with Lena this whole time?" he asked.
"What?" I questioned. "The both of y'all are back the same time. You mean too tell me y'all wasn't together?" I shook my head no.
"When she get back?" Kendrick asked him. "A few days ago," he said.
She's back?
Leandra
Three Days Later.
"Where you going Lena?" Brit asked me. "Work," I answered quickly. "You work nights at Forever 21 too?" I shook my head no. "I have another job Brit," I answered grabbing my bag. "Okay well when will you be home? I have to talk too you about something important," she said I looked over reading her worried expression.
"What?" I asked while quickly gathering my things. "This calls for you undivided attention Lena and I see you're in a rush so we'll talk when you get home okay?" I nodded placing my bag over my shoulder.
"Okay, well since I am in a rush can I please borrow your car?" she chuckled handing me the keys. "Are you going to still be up though Lena? I'm going to be home real late," I assured her.
"We can talk in the morning then just go," I nodded. "Thanks," I called out running out the house. ***
"Lena, what's up?" Max the bouncer asked me. "Nothing much Sean here?" he shook his head no. "But he does have someone in the back waiting for you," I raised my eyebrow but said nothing. I continued to his office to see exactly who Sean left for me. It was my first day here and I would have loved for him to welcome me except for someone I don't know. His ass gets on my nerves sometimes.
"You Lena?" a girl asked once I stepped foot in his office, I nodded. "I'm Miracle but around here it's Cherry. Sean and I are real close so he asked me to do this, I rather do this then act buddy with the girls here anyway. They irk my soul," she said we shared a quick laugh before she showed me to the bar.
"You know how to mix?" she asked I nodded. "Okay these items here mix them for me," she said placing a clip board down with a bunch of drinks on it.
After making and sampling the drinks I was required to make she had a satisfied smile on her face. "Yea they gon love you in here, you cute too," she chuckled. "Thank you" I smiled.
"Why you here though? This don't look like your type of thing," I chuckled throwing my hair up in a bun.
"I need fast money, this is the best thing for me too do," I shrugged. "I understand, I'm here for the same reasons but I do love to dance also. First time in a strip club?" I shook my head no.
"I used to dance in Cali and I hated it," I admitted.
"I get it, a lot of the guys don't like too follow rules but they also do it because some girls allow it. Me and you probably the only good ones here," she smiled I mirrored her smile and got to know her a little more. She's real cool, I can see her being the only friend I have here and I'm fine with that. ***
"Okay girls, we have a new member on the team. This is Lena and she's our new bartender," Sean announced after about three hours of me being here he decided to show.
"So," the same girl I caught in his office my first time coming here blurted out. "That's precious," Cherry directed towards me I nodded. "She doesn't need to know my name Cherry," Precious stated rolling her eyes. "She should know her haters though," Cherry shrugged Sean huffed draping his arm around my shoulder shaking his head.
"Calm down please, and get ready because tonight is a busy night okay," he finished his mini speech looking me.
"I'll be fine Sean, this is no different then Cali okay. I got this," I winked he nodded.
"Cool, Cherry work the bar with Lena tonight," he yelled out she nodded. "In all honesty pay no mind to these girls especially Precious. Being that you and Sean is real cool she's going to have eyes on you at all times, and will casually spread rumors that it's more then a friendship between you guys," she paused looking over at Precious.
"She swears that Sean is her man when really he just uses her for head," she said as we laughed. "I believe you, caught them when I first came here, she was upset that he kicked her out," I said we bust out laughing at the look she gave us and proceeded to the bar. Cherry is my girl for real
Two Hours Later.
"How you doing?" Sean asked sitting on a stool I smiled placing a costar in front of him. "Just give me some henny," I nodded placing the cup down.
"I'm good, a little busier then I expected but I'm fine. Besides I got Cherry here to help me," she smiled my way then focused back on her customer. "I knew you two would get along," he chuckled downing his drink he motioned his hand for more which had me curious.
"What's wrong?" I asked him. "I can't tell you," he sighed throwing his glass back.
"Sean how long have we've known each other?" I asked filling his cup yet again. "10 years," he answered I nodded.
"Okay and in those 10 years have we ever kept any secrets from each other?" he chuckled shaking his head no. "It's not so much of a secret though Lena." he paused being real hesitant.
"It's just I don't know how you'll handle it," he sighed running his hand down his face roughly. I grabbed the bottle and the cup away from him and gave him a stern look.
"What's wrong?" I asked he sighed. "Jay's back, and I kind of revealed to him that your back but that's only because I thought you two were together," he said I gasped stepping back.
He's back?

Two Hours Later.
"Hold up Lena!" Nay called out breathlessly as we speed walked too our terminal. I don't know how I deal with this girl, just this morning she was crying over her now ex boyfriend Mandela cheating on her, then ended up crying because she's leaving him. Now we're rushing, I cannot afford for this plane too leave us.
"Wait, wait!!" I yelled to the lady she took our tickets and we began running until we got on the plane. "Told you we'd make it," she laughed I lightly pushed her and went too find our seats. ***
"Welcome to New York ladies and gentlemen and thank you for flying Flight 301, the plane will be landing shortly" The flight attendant announced. I smiled while looking over Nay's head out the window. The plane erupted in cheers followed by claps as we made a safe landing.
"I know I was hesitant at first but I'm glad to be back," Nay squealed I chuckled shaking my head until it was time too take off our seat belts.
"So nobody knows we're here?" Nay asked as we placed our bags in the back of a near by mini-van just waiting to cater someone.
"No," I answered. "And for now I plan on keeping it that way," I breathed out closing the trunk she nodded as we got in the cab.
"Well are you going to call Brit?" she asked after I told the driver our destination. Before leaving I made sure everything was settled. As far as getting a place to live, Lanay's new school and a job interview I have tomorrow. My school duties will have to be handled face to face which I have to get too once we touch down.
"Yea but I'll call her tomorrow after my interview. I'm already tired and I know after handling everything at school I'm not going to be up for Brit and all her festive activities," I joked but she nodded.
"I hear you, but Brandon and Paige are going to be waiting for us outside the building" she smiled.
"You would call them right? Please just make sure Paige doesn't go running her mouth, the whole New York will know we're back," I chuckled she bust out laughing only because she knew it was true. Brandon and Paige were two of Nay's closest friends and even though we moved they never lost touch.
Although I moved to California to get away from everything bad that happened here in New York I was happy to be home, this is where I was born and raised. I enjoyed Cali a lot but nothing is compared to the Concrete Jungle.
The Next Day.
"Who you here too see?" The bouncer asked me. "Sean," I replied giving him a small smile.
"You have an appointment?" he asked me. An appointment for a strip club really?
"No, I'm a real good friend of his, do I have to go through you or?" I questioned he chucked shaking his head.
"Go right in baby girl," he smiled. I sent him a small thank you and walked right into 'The Lion's Den.' It was just like Sean to be so over the top and so extravagant. But I don't blame him, this place is real nice.
With an amused expression on my face I shook my head as I read over the black words on the door. 'Lion's Den'. This of course had to be Sean's room. With the bouncer not helping me nor him asking someone too assist me I had to find this room on my own.
Without hesitation or even actually thinking I opened the door, and laughed as I watch the half naked girl jump too her feet and Sean quickly pull his pants up. "Sorry Sean," I smiled shaking my head he waved me off.
"Precious leave, come in here Lena," he smiled big. The girl sucked her teeth and stomped her way out the room. "Same ol' Sean," I laughed as he walked up too me with open arms.
"I would hug you but really I don't know what's been going on in here so," I chuckled tapping his shoulder. Before I could even sit down his small arms wrapped around my body, and felt his chin on my shoulder.
"It's been like three years Leandra, you gon' hug my ass," I laughed slipping out his grip and sat down. "So you back for good?" I nodded placing my bag in the seat next too me.
"Word? But what you doing here though? You need something?" he questioned suspiciously.
"Why do I have too need something, I'm back and want too see the people I missed," he shook his head. "All that may be good but yo ass must have forget I know you. Know you too damn well, so spill it," he said. "Okay. I need a job," if it's one thing I know Sean isn't going to hire me too work here, so I have too convince him.
"A job where Lena?" he asked eyebrow arched. "Here," I simply answered. He laughed shaking his head, but stopped once he saw how serious I was. "No Lena. You really think I'm about too let you work here? You out your damn mind, fuck will pops think if he found out you was shaking your ass for some money," he grumbled I rolled my eyes at the mention of my Uncle.
"Okay one, my uncle is not even your real father. And two, who cares what he thinks," I folded my arms piercing with him with my eyes. "You can look at me like that forever Lean you're not working here, and he his my pops. He took me in when nobody else would, he raised me and practically raised you. Show him some respect," he spat I waved him off.
"It's not going to bring my mom back so why should I?" he shook his head. "I think you should talk too him about that for real Lena. You're blowing this all out of proportion," he sighed rubbing his face. "When it's time to cross that road I'll figure it out. But for now I need a job that's going to get me money fast. I don't want too dance, just have me bar tend," I shrugged. "What you need money for?" he asked me.
"School, rent, utilities, everyday life." I shrugged running my fingers through my hair. "I can give it too Lena you know that," he stressed I shook my head no. "I'm not charity, if you don't let me work here I'll go somewhere else," I said grabbing my bag. "So they can treat you like shit? Hell no Lena, only five days a week you pick the days you want." he mumbled I smiled big wrapping my arms around him.
"Thank you Sean, we can just keep it between me and you. I have an interview with Forever 21, if everything goes well I'll pan out the days and get back at you," I said he nodded. "You gon ware yourself out Lena," he warned. I don't think so.
"It's good too have you home though, I missed ya little ass, and where my thug Nay at?" he asked me. "Unpacking. I gotta go Sean?" he nodded embracing me in another hug and kissed my forehead. I sent him a small smile before quickly leaving the club.
That actually went better then expected. ***
It was no surprise I got the job at Forever 21, they looked like they were in desperate need of help and at $13 dollars an hour I wasn't about to turn that down for nothing. I was done taking cabs for the day, so my only other source was public transportation. Living in New York all my life I hated the bus and trains, this is the only negative of moving back here. When I get enough money, a car will most def be in the works.
"Do you have a metro card?" the lady asked me I shook my head no. "One dollar extra" I sucked my teeth. "For what," I questioned she chuckled. "For the metro card read the sign," she pointed I shook my head handing her six dollars. I remember when the fare was two dollars now it's two fifty. They need too just bring tokens back.
Grabbing the metro card I swiped through and looked up at the scheduled timed trains. I placed my headphones and blasted my music. My train was soon too arrive and music was my way only to cope with being underground, the kids, and every other annoying thing that came with riding the train. 125th street couldn't come any sooner.
"Hello," she answered groggily. I chuckled leaning on a car as I stood in front of the brownstone home she lived in all her life. "I know your ass is not sleeping Brittany. It's 3 in the afternoon." I laughed. "Lena?" she questioned. "No boo boo the fool, wake up." I said into the phone.
"I just got in from school like an hour ago, I'm tired," she mumbled. "Oh that's nice, well come downstairs," I instructed. "For what?" she asked as I heard shuffling in the background. "Better yet just look out your window," I said looking up at the window for her room.
"Lena you're scaring me," she said in an excited tone. I bust out laughing once her face appeared in the window, her hair was all over the place. "Ahhhhh!" she screamed I laughed hanging up the phone shaking my head. This girl is too much.
"Lena what are you doing here? How long have you been here? Are you back for good?" she rambled as she jumped on me. No matter the anger I have towards her dad I will never put Brit between that nor did I want anything to come between us because of it. She's my cousin but also my best friend, at the hip since diapers. Nothing will change that.
"Slow down Brit, but yes I'm back for good," I smiled. "I'm so happy you're home man, I've missed you and Nay like crazy. Where is my munch?" she asked I shrugged. "If she ain't unpacking, probably out with Brandon and Paige," she nodded grabbing my hand as we walked in the house.
"Let me go fix my hair, you know the crew missed yo ass." she squealed I shook my head. "The crew?" I questioned softly she sighed. "He hasn't come back Lena, not even called so I doubt we'll run into him," she assured me I nodded.
I should have known.
Jermaine
"Where have you been all this time boy?" my aunt asked me I chuckled running my hand roughly through the fro that was beginning to grow on top me head. I have to remind myself before this week is over to get a haircut.
"In the ville aunty," I breathed out. My aunts reaction too my return was way different from my uncle. When I got here yesterday she wasn't even in the city, she just got back today from a business trip. I mean I know she's happy I'm back but I wasn't welcomed with open arms either.
"I should have figured that. What made you go back though?" I shrugged. "Well I haven't been there in forever, and in some way it made me feel closer to my mom. Being that she's from there and although I was born there I never got too live there," I paused meeting her gaze. "After she died I wasn't myself at all and I just didn't want to be around or talk too anyone," I explained she nodded.
"I understand Jay but do you know how that made me and your uncle feel? I felt I failed as your legal guardian and let Leann down." she spoke softly.
"I know and I'm sorry for that, I should have called too let you guys know I was good and again I'm sorry," she smiled. "You don't have too apologize Jay. You staying here?" she asked me I laughed shaking my head no. "Dang, you acting like you don't want me here," I joked she waved me off.
"Boy please, I was just asking so I could get your room situated. You already got your own place and everything?" I nodded. "Yea, I didn't want to come back unprepared so I took care of everything way before arriving," she nodded.
"What about school though?" I didn't know how too tell her this only because I know she'd be disappointed in me some what. See my aunt and I are real close, always have been since a youngin' her and my uncle been together a good minute. Anyway, her and my moms used to be best friends, when my mom got sick she stepped up. All I really had was her and my uncle, she's become my second mom and too know I disappointed her in anyway would make me feel like shit.
"I went too school out there," I mumbled. "So you had a graduation and didn't tell us?" disappointment was laced tight in her voice. "I didn't go, I collected my diploma and everything after the fact. Made no sense since you guys weren't there. Again I'm sorry," I said. Me saying sorry will become a habit once facing everybody. I know it.
"It's fine Jay, what's done is done. I'm just happy you're home," she said making me smile. I pulled her in for a hug and kissed her cheek. "I'm happy to be back," I watched as she went back to what she was doing before sitting down talking to me. She was in here chefing it up, and while I wanted to catch up with old friends I need some grub before any of that.
"I was going to ask had you seen any of your friends. But being that you've been here all day, I already answered my question," she said I nodded. "Are you going too see reach out?" she asked me. "Yea, how has that been since me leaving?" I asked taking a sip of my lemonade.
"It's been the same Jermaine, just because you left doesn't mean they'd keep their distance. Although-" she paused. I grew nervous at that, what was she exactly about too tell me.
"Although what?" I questioned. "Lena," she sighed shaking her head turning the stove down too look at me. "What about her?" I asked growing worried. "She did the same as you, a year after you left she packed her and Nay up and hasn't been seen since," she informed me.
I was really hoping to see her too. At the time of my mother's death Lena and I were together, she was my girl, my best friend my everything. My mother died when I had just hit 19 and as I stated to my aunt before in a sense I was lost. No one could do anything to make things right not even her. Fast forward to my twentieth birthday it hit me hard that my moms was gone so in the middle of the night I just dipped. I had no idea where I was going at the time but I made up my mind that I was not staying in New York.
I know for a fact it will be difficult for us too patch things up quickly because I left her, I left my girl with no warning. But now she's gone and no where to be found so how exactly is our reunion going to work?
"Well is her mom's number still the same? Maybe I can call her," my aunt shook her head as her eyes started to get glossy. "Her mother died Jay," my heart sank to the pit of my stomach.
Mama Taylor died? That cannot be, how and why? Why wasn't I there for her, she needed me and I was gone.
"Jay," my aunt called out. Blinking out of my thoughts I looked at her. "Yea," I grumbled. "Don't beat yourself up over this okay. Maybe she'll find her way home like you did," she tried to make light of the situation but I felt like a jerk. Shit I am a jerk.
"I gotta go aunty. I'll come back later for my plate though," she nodded as we stood too our feet. "You be careful Jay," she warned I nodded as I quickly left the house.
I mean there are really only two people who will most likely know where she is or have talked too her. My best bet is too start there. ***
"What's hanin'?" he answered I chuckled shaking my head. "Where you at nigga?" I asked as I sat in Ray's Pizza Shop.
"Who the hell is this?" he questioned. "I mean I know I been gone for a little while but you don't recognize a nigga voice? Damn dot, that shit hurts," I joked he bust out laughing. "Hear your ass trying to get all fucking sentimental over the phone," he said as we shared a laugh.
After my uncle I knew there would be no hard feelings between Kendrick and I, although I know he's going to want an explanation.
"It's good to hear from you though man. I won't even lie a nigga missed you and shit," he said. "Same here, same here but where you at though?" I asked again. "Shit just stepped out the studio? Fuck you disappear too though?" he asked me. "Just come to Ray's pizza shop," I said completely ignoring his question. "I'm here with Jordyn though," he said. "Wait hold up your ass is back in New York?" he quickly asked.
"Yea man, I came back yesterday crashed at my Uncle's house. Bring her with you but don't tell her where you going," I instructed. "You sure you want me to bring her, she hates your guts right now man. A couple people do but I ain't gon get into that right now," he said I chuckled shaking my head. "Oh I know that, but yea bring her." I said after giving me his okay and saying he'll be here in ten minutes we hung up.
The only other person who hates me besides Lena and Jordyn is of course Brittany. And that rigt there is a wrath I'm not prepared to feel, but I did this too myself so I have to deal with it.
Or maybe I'm making this bigger then what it seems. I pray that I am.
