Portrait of ballet dancer and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky (1889-1950). Nijinsky's unique dancing style and charm notably contributed to the rise to fame of dancing company Les Ballets Russes. Nijinsky, who was also the lover of Les Ballets Russes founder and impresario Sergei Diaghilev, was a genius choreographer and was responsible for some of the most groundbreaking ballets of the 20th century - including the shocking Le Sacre du Printemps in 1913. As Diaghilev grew more and more controlling and obsessive towards Nijinsky, the latter escaped from his attention by rushing into a not very successful marriage with a colleague ballerina. On hearing the news, Diaghilev immediately dismissed Nijinsky from Les Ballets Russes. How exactly would one write in second person pluperfect subjunctive? I'd like to do it but I'd also like to check that I have the right idea.

Yeah, it’s a tricky one. English has no formal pluperfect subjunctive, so it needs to be constructed on the fly, and it’s easy to accidentally drift into other moods.

In general, the pluperfect subjuctive mood deals with hypotheticals regarding the past, specifically in the context of considering the effects of a hypothetical action at time A with respect to events at time B, where both A and B are in the past. The general form of a pluperfect subjunctive statement is “if you had done A, then B would(n’t) have occurred”.

For example: “If you’d remembered to bring your wallet, we wouldn’t have had to cover for you in the first place.” In this case, remembering to bring your wallet is the hypothetical action under consideration, and the speaker covering for you is the event upon which the effect of that action is considered. Note that both the act of remembering your wallet and the event of the speaker covering your tab are in the past relative to the time of the statement.

(Conversely, “if you’d remembered to bring your wallet, we wouldn’t be in this mess!” is not an example of the pluperfect subjunctive; while the hypothetical action is in the past, the event on which it bears is in the present.)
