New subscribers sometimes received free gifts and non-subscribers could only watch it when their cable company offered free preview weeks and weekends to boost sales.
Throughout the '90s the channel became less premium and more, well, basic. Access to the channel was based on contracts between Walt Disney Company and cable operators as well as service location.
In 1997 The Disney Channel became Disney Channel and was split into programming blocks (Playhouse, Zoog, Vault). In 1999 Disney Channel insisted that cable operators include it in their basic channel packages.
