A while back I actually thought it might have been a different older king because his horns are curling the wrong direction compared to Asgore's sideways walk sprites but it's more likely they were just using his talk/battle sprite as the bass and didn't realize they needed to flip the horn

I just imagined that things 100 years ago went exactly the same up until that last memory when Link dies and she destroys the Guardians but instead she also inadvertently brings Link back from the brink and gives him enough of her power to fend of Ganon causing her to die

This is off topic but you mentioning Alphys was probably lying to herself reminded me of the Asgore conversation at the end of the Geno run. It's impossible that he doesn't know what's happening, MTT explicitly says that Alphys has told him. Asgore seems to have come to terms on some level, Feeling it was only a matter of time after what he's done, and he's playing dumb to make the moment pass, to try help it get over with, to make it hurt less.
