Late submission for day 2 for @vaxlethweek! I'm still busy with day one and day 3. Dunno if I'm gonna do every day, but you can defs expect at least two more pieces from me
Anyway, congratulations to my two most special baby girls <3
Hi everyone! We have started working on gathering prompts for this year's Vaxleth Week, so we would love to hear from you on a subject we have been discussing.
She repeated it like a mantra in her head: I'll find you. I'll find you. I will find you. It kept her grounded, kept her focused.
The world had already taken too much from her, from him, from all of them. She would not lose him. She forced herself to not consider any other option, because if she did, those freezing chains of fear would choke her heart and leave her paralysed. She had no time to lose, no time to fall apart.
She had no time to consider the precipice she was on, how Vax was falling, slowly, slowly, away from her, and he could only go so far before he'd be lost from her forever.
With the life that they lead, Keyleth knows that she can't stop Vax from getting hurt. But, she'll fight with everything she has to make sure, time after time, he comes back home to her. When Vax disappears without a trace, she has to prove it.
Written for Vaxleth Week 2025, day 6: I'll find you, I promise/ First meeting
Is anyone else going to participate in Vaxleth Week? The third day is almost finished, and as far as I can tell, nobody else has posted anything.
I asked if people wanted me to postpone it, and the only response I got was people asking me not to. But now nobody is participating. If nobody’s going to participate now, I’d rather not keep going. I’d rather save the prompts and stuff I put work into for a time when people are feeling more inclined to participate.
Title: Markings
Author: Kiki
Fandom: Critical Role
Pairing: Keyleth/Vax
Word Count: 1313
Spoilers: Kind of vagueish spoilers to recent-ish. Yeah, super specific, I know.
Notes: This was written for Vaxleth Week, today theme prompt of “touch”. I have no idea if this are what Keyleth’s marking mean. I just liked the idea.
Notes 2: As always, I rely on you feedback to make my fics better. I always polish these up a lot before I post them to ao3, and every bit of constructive feedback helps.
Keyleth lets out a happy sigh as Vax's fingers run over her naked skin. She's lying on her stomach, her cheek against the pillow, covered from the waist down with a soft sheet, enjoying the feeling of his touch as he traces the markings the cover her arms. "What do these mean?" he asks.
"They're from my tribe," she replies, her voice breathy and slow, the relaxation she feels in the afterglow seeping into her voice. "They signify milestones in our lives and in the tribe."
"So, you do something important, you get a tattoo?"
"Hmm," she hums her confirmation. "They're not really tattoos, but that's the general idea. We get the first ones on our left arm when we come of age."
His touch moves to her arm, his fingertips following the lines of her markings, the long loops that encircle her bicep. His palms runs back up, toward her shoulder, finding two marks that stretch across her shoulder blade. "What are these for?"
"I got them just before I left for my Aramente," Keyleth says. "When I finish my journey and return home, I'll get matching marks on my other shoulder."
The sensation of his lips pressing against her skin, placing light kisses against each inch of each mark on her shoulder makers her shiver as it sets her on fire.
"This one's my favorite," he tells her, her breath tickling against the path he had just charted with his lips.
She giggles. "Why?"
"It's the one that brought you to me," he answers. "If you hadn't left Zephra to go on your Aramente, I never would have met you."
A smile stretches across Keyleth's face at his words as his lips move from her shoulder, up her neck, and across her cheek. She lifts her head slightly to meet him in a slow, lazy kiss.
Vax continues to move his fingers over her markings, tracing them gently, sometimes leaving a lingering kiss. He finds the large loop just below her left elbow, dipping all the way down to the inside of her wrist. "What's this one?"
"When I chose to be a member of the Ashari," she explains. "We're very big on personal choice, and nobody is forced to be in the tribe, even if we're born into it. When a person decides to be an Ashai, they get this marking."
His fingers continue their exploration of the mark while he sits in thoughtful silence for a long moment before he asks, "So will I get one when I join the tribe?"
The question takes her off guard, and it's several moments before her brain he really processed it. Once it has, she shoots up, turning to look at him and pulling the sheet about around her chest.
"What are you talking about?"
Vax seems startled by her sudden movement and confused by her question. "When we go back to the Air Ashari after you've finished your Aramente... will I get a marking like that?" His voice is cautious, as though he's worried that he might be upsetting her.
"You..." she starts slowly, her brow furrowed. "You want to come back to Zephra with me?"
"Of course I do," he responds as he moves toward her, bringing his hand to her cheek.
"I can't ask you to do that."
"You're not asking me to do anything."
"What about Vex?" Keyleth asks, her voice small.
"You let me worry about Vex," he answers, his thumb stroking her cheek.
"Vax-"
"We'll figure it out." His words are insistent, but as he watches her his expression becomes uncertain. "Unless... do you not want me to go with you?"
"No!" she says, practically jumping forward to take his face between her hands, almost knocking him off balance. "Of course I do! I just, well I never really thought that far ahead."
"Kiki," Vax says, his voice little more than a whisper. "I want a life with you. A future. I will follow you anywhere."
"That's what I want, too," Keyleth replies, her voice growing thick with tears. "I don't know, I guess I've been trying so hard not to be scared of what might happen, to not let how scared I am of possible futures keep me from being happy now that I've been trying to focus on being in the moment. And I just focused so much on that and kind of forgot to think about an actual future where the good things happen instead of the bad things."
"I don't want you to feel like you have to say yes to anything you're not sure about just because I want it," he says, an almost plaintive tone to his voice that reminds her of less happy times, before she stopped being scared, before Vax had found peace with his calling, when they were both so unsure and so frightened. She's so glad that they've both moved past that point, that they've both found a happiness they never thought they'd have. Seeing that sound in his voice, even a hint of it, breaks her heart. She never wants Vax to be unsure about her again.
"I'm not," she insists. "I can't imagine a future without you."
It's true. And right now it's a sentiment that makes Vax happy, and her happy in turn. But she knows that, no matter what decisions they make, whether he comes with her or not, it's very likely that there is a future, a long future, without Vax. It's unavoidable and the thought terrified her, filling her chest with panic. She had to focus on Vax's smile as he moves forward, sweeping her into a hug, to get her head back into the right place.
Don't let that future scare you away from the future you're going to have with Vax, she tells herself. Don't let you fear of having to live without him scare you into never having him in the first place.
She takes a few deep breaths, burying her nose in Vax's neck and taking in his scent, letting it calm her. The panic seeps out of her until all she can feel is his arms around her, his lips against her cheek, and the words, "I love you," being whispered against her skin.
"I love you, too," she says, pulling back to look at him. His smile is so bright, something she's growing more and more used to seeing on him. Her happiness and joy bubbles over, and she can't stop giggling as Vax leans in, pressing his lips to hers as he lowers her to the bed.
Later, Keyleth rests her cheek against Vax' chest, listening to his heart beat against her ear. Her fingers trace over his collar bone, down to the dip of his throat. "Since you weren't born into the tribe," she says, her voice soft, but slightly rough, "you'll have to complete a trial. When you finish it you'll get a mark right here." She runs her fingertip back and forth of the spot, from the tip of his collar bone down, and he lets out an appreciative moan.
"Tell me some more," he says, his hand running up her back to tangle in her hair.
She smiles, pressing a kiss to his chest where she can feel his heart beating before leaning across his chest and grasping his hand running her fingertip up the inside of his wrist, to the tip of his thumb. "You'll get this one when you go on your first hunt." She lifted her finger, moving her hand to his elbow to show him where he'd get the three curved lines that would mark the first time he communes with nature. One the way, she runs her fingers around his wrist and over his palm, smiling. Right now, it's just for her. She won't tell him what it means now, but she will. Eventually.
