Thinking about how my bar mitzvah was parshah Vayetze and I gave my dvar Torah on the difference between miracles and magic (based on the story of the sheep and the rods) and how magic is not allowed by miracles are. And then talking about what if magic was used for good and I talked about Harry Potter and Heroes (the TV Show) - showing my age here lol - and superheroes and that maybe the difference between magic and miracle shouldn't be to do with god's permission but instead to do with intention and helping people and power and responsibility.

Could I have spoken about Jacob's dream and struggle with god? Yes. But like, I refuse to take the easy way out and I'll never give up the opportunity to talk about magic.

Vayetze

I dreamt at night in a place of stone, I lay at the gateway to heaven. A rock rested beneath my head God was there but I did not know it.

I came to the land where the Easterners live and there I found my lover. For her I rolled the stone away I kissed and I wept and I slaved.

She stole from her father his gods of stone although I did not know it. I cannot rise before you, Lord, This is the way of women.

A cry is heard in Ramah, oh, wailing, bitter weeping. My lover weeps for her children, long gone — their dust is lost on the earth.

A pillow of stone became a pillar, a pillar became a temple to God. The temple is gone but the mountain remains. At night you can hear its stone.
