Reflection on Process Thus Far + Hitting LO's: LO3, LO4

Week 5

By summarising my work thus far, I wanted to see where i was evidencing each of the learning outcomes. By colour-coding this and visualising it, I could see the areas that need more attention, such as LO2 + LO3.

At this stage in my project, I feel i am in a good stage- however, wanted to create even more of a specified action plan for the next couple of weeks. This will help me align more with the work I have done, and keep me on track.

Creating Presentation- LO2 + LO3

When initially starting to make my final presentation, I wanted to think about narrative. This project is very narrative based, as the nature of the campaign leads someone through a festival experience, and has various touchpoints to guide the audience. I therefore firstly atarted to visualise this narrative, creating sketches to order the different touch points.

After doing so, I wanted to sketch and create quick experiments to further visualise this. By creating really quick mockups, I wanted to gage the order of each page, and make sure the project flowed from page to page.

This is when I began to explore dfferent mockups, making sure to find some that really added context to each outcome. For instance, I wanted to find banner-style posters that would be acting as a sort of way-finding platform to guide the audience. By doing so and finding them, I could then start visualising this process, and exploring the narrative i am building.

As for the hero-page, I struggled in choosing which touchpoints to showcase, and which to leave out. As my project has many touchpoints and is a brand, I initially explored putting lots of information on the page, then putting barely any. I wanted to give just enough visual information to capture the focus on festivals, skin, and spf care. This was really tricky to do, as my project exists as an entire experience, rather than a single product or brand.

I wanted to include both the truck and arms with the stickers, to try and communicate the main two touch points of this brand. However, by using colour as a background, I felt this created too much of a light + feminine design, which therefore ignored a large part of my demographic.

I thought back to my User persona + colour scheme, and then decided on experimenting with black instead. This felt a lot more modern and fitting for Gen Z and music festivals. This also allowed for my designs to speak for themselves more.

I also researched into previous RSA and D&AD winners, looking at how they display information, and what they included. This helped me gather more insight as to how I should refine my visual ideas more.

Will It Blend? Initial Idea Generation + Research: LO1 + LO2

To initiate this project, I began mindmapping synonyms of the two words I had been given- 'Industry + Understand'. By doing so, I could gather the context of the words better- leading me to then have more information to research and work with.

By then defining the words for their literal definitions, I wanted to grasp the meaning and explanation behind each word. This again allowed me to see the words in a wider context, such as 'industry' connoting to hard work alongside factories- starting to give me inspiration.

I then defined what these words meant to me, as 'understanding' both words feels crucial to this process. This then would allow me to start exploring these definitions further, to start imagining them in different contexts.

By then using this website, I researched into the different types of industries, to give me even more information on what the word means. My findings indicated that there are a plethora of industries that exist, however, they are all commercialised and based on the economic value of society. Some examples included:

📍 Task is to create 6 experiments that blend 2 contexts together. These experiments will be applied in following contexts: sound, photography, animation, type, illustration and colour.

When getting briefed for this week-long project, I found this concept to be really interesting. As a multi-media designer at heart, I thought this project could be a really fun way of exploring different avenues of creativity that I don't usually go down, being able to just experiment without too much pressure.

VC0665 Specialist Practice Unit Brief

Tuesdays as studio days

📍 Provides opportunity to find an area of subject specialism + create a body of work on that. Find what you find interesting and use this as a springboard to choose your focus. Evidence YOUR LEVEL OF CRITICAL JUDGEMENT. Ideas should evidence critical judgement in terms of aesthetics, fitness for purpose, communication values, technical viability, environmental, social and cultural considerations.

📍 Plan and manage work either independently. 80% hand in before Christmas- process book, ISTD/RSA, Will it blend? 20% is D&AD.

💡 Short project- designed to start exploring themes, experimental components. Main chunk is ISTD/RSA (RSA illustration, different mediums) brief- competition brief.

Learning outcomes:

LO1- Demonstrate the acquisition of detailed knowledge through research, some of which is informed by histories, contexts, contemporary practice within the subject including aspects of current research, and/or academic scholarship (research- who are the leading designers in your field)

LO2- Demonstrate your ability to use the knowledge gained to generate highly original and appropriate ideas, make critical and analytical judgements in developing your design ideas, evidencing understanding of user and audience behaviours (development- different ideas, how they are successful, suitable aesthetics that function)

Home of stop-motion artist PES, creator of the shortest film ever nominated for an Oscar, Fresh Guacamole

I found PES when I was at college, I have always found his stop motion animations brilliant. That he sticks so close to the themes like in ‘SUBMARINE SANDWICH’ using all sports related cards, gloves, balls, as substitutes for food items, you understand what it is even without commentary, without looking at the title, or having someone tell you, you know from visuals alone. 

I also tried stop motion in college, it was difficult but fun to do. I gave it a little go in this project, with paper cut outs instead, I thought of Monty Pythons  Terry Gilliam and his animation style.

Anna Ginsburg’s latest short is an unlikely ode to the random joy of public transport

Digging out a phone recording of a chance encounter on the bus a few months ago, Anna’s new short is joyfully nostalgic for a public transport journey.

Brilliant animation and I love her animation style. Seems random to animate, but so much happens on public transport, and with her style of illustration and animation it works so well. You can tell what everything is, the colours are reflective of the mood, textures are great and timing is done so well.
