laughter  falls  from  steve's  lips  easily  when  he's  around  nat  –  something  that  feels  foreign  to  the  new  yorker  in  the  twenty  first  century.          his  face  could  be  flushed  from  a  number  of  reasons  –  the  work  out  ,  the  laughter  ,  the  embarrassment  from  the  lack  of  space  nat  is  now  putting  between  them.    it's  a  fair  tactic  to  get  back  at  him   –    he's  holding  her  shirt  high  above  them  ,  his  six  foot  four  frame  making  it  easy  enough  to  play  keep-away.          ❛     you  stole  this  from  me  last  week  –  i'm  just  taking  back  what's  mine.   ❜       does  it  leave  her  in  her  sports  bra  ?        yes.       it's  not  a  look  he's  unfamiliar  with  –  training  in  full  clothes  was  tedious  for  anyone.        he's  shirtless  –  can't  judge  her  for  minimal  clothing.      but  the  shirt  she'd  come  in  was  one  that  had  gone  missing.        she'd  smirked  when  they  met  eyes.         now  it's  him  that's  smirking  ,  even  with  his  rosy  cheeks. 

would  he  ever  adjust  to  having  women  close  to  him  ?         he'd  rough  housed  with  bucky  their  whole  adolescence.        how  many  things  had  bucky  held  far  above  while  pre-serum  steve  resorted  to  climbing  surfaces  to  outsmart  him  ?         to  be  fair  ,  steve  ended  up  just  as  red  faced  from  anger  &*  embarrassment  back  then  –  &*  want  ,  the  closer  it  pressed  him  to  his  friend.      that  seems  to  stand  here  ,  too  ,  as  nat  stands  on  her  toes  ,  one  hand  on  his  chest  while  the  other  reaches  up  to  try  &*  snag  the  shirt.       this  is  all  a  game  –  if  she  wanted  it  ,  she'd  get  it.        take  out  his  knees  ,  climb  him  like  a  tree  –  nothing  could  actually  stop  her.       but  she's  pressing  close  &*  pretending  her  only  means  of  getting  it  back  rely  on  standing  on  tip  toes.       that's  what's  making  him  laugh  –  that  she's  resorting  to  childish  whining  &*  lightly  hitting  his  chest.      

❛   why'd  you  take  it  anyway  ?       budget  cuts  ?      can't  afford  your  own  t-shirts  ?   ❜       teasing  tone  is  given  as  he  leans  back  ,  arching  form  pressing  close  even  while  his  arm  &*  upper  body  tilts  away.       ❛   could'a  just  asked.      i  love  donating  to  charity.   ❜        his  grin  is  boyish  &*  amused.       he  could  get  away  if  he  wanted  to.      but  he  doesn't.     that  is  evident  in  how  his  hand  holds  her  waist  –  grips  hard  ,   as  if  to  keep  her  from  jumping  up.         ❛    you  did  look  pretty  good  in  it.    ❜        perhaps  she  is  the  only  woman  he'd  ever  be  able  to  flirt  with  easily  –  comfort  eases  his  tongue.       she's  always  had  that  effect  on  him.

he  has  not  been  in  this  position  for  a  very  ,  very  long  time.       𝒏𝒐𝒕  𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒆  𝒃𝒆𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒆  𝒕𝒉𝒆  𝒘𝒂𝒓.       it  hadn't  been  abnormal  back  then  ,  especially  considering  how  sick  he  was  so  often.       between  bucky  &*  sarah  ,  he'd  found  himself  curled  up  on  someone's  lap  rather  frequently.        but  he  is  the  picture  of  health  now  &*  the  most  solitary  man  in  new  york.         he  only  allows  the  intimacy  now  because  his  heart  is  heavy  –  it  drags  him  down  onto  the  cushions  when  nat  pats  her  lap  &*  gives  him  that  look  of  sympathy.        his  hand  discards  the  funeral  pamphlet  he  holds  onto  the  table  ,  then  he  allows  himself  to  curl  up  there.       making  himself  small  is  no  easy  feat  ,  but  the  couch  in  the  complex  is  large  enough  to  fit  the  team.          

her  hand  finds  his  hair  &*  he  feels  his  shoulders  sag.         he'd  barely  gotten  out  of  his  suit  jacket  before  she  beckoned  him.       his  tie  still  feels  suffocating.        𝒑𝒆𝒈𝒈𝒚'𝒔  𝒇𝒖𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒍  𝒊𝒔  𝒕𝒉𝒆  𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕  𝒉𝒆'𝒔  𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒅  𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒆  𝒉𝒊𝒔  𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒔.      strange  ,  given  he's  been  surrounded  by  ghosts  since  arriving  in  the  twenty  first  century.       bucky  hadn't  had  a  funeral.       he  wasn't  here  when  the  commandos  passed  one  by  one.      howard  was  long  gone.       peggy  was  his  last  solid  tether  ,  &*  even  that  was  so  strained  by  her  dementia.         bucky  is  out  there  –  the  winter  soldier  that  let  him  live.       he  can  hope  to  save  him  ;  to  bring  him  back.        but  today  that  hope  is  dim.        

so  he  closes  his  eyes  &*  lets  one  hand  rest  just  under  her  knee  as  he  presses  his  cheek  into  her  thigh.        𝒉𝒆  𝒉𝒂𝒔  𝒐𝒏𝒆  𝒇𝒐𝒐𝒕  𝒊𝒏  𝒕𝒉𝒆  𝒑𝒂𝒔𝒕  ,  but  the  other  rests  solidly  here  with  her.        the  accords  are  far  from  his  mind.       he  won't  think  of  the  strain  of  the  avengers  breaking  apart.       losing  something  else  dear  to  him  is  it's  own  torture  that  might  just  drag  him  under  today.        steve  forces  himself  to  only  think  of  nat  –  of  her  soothing  nails  against  his  scalp  &*  the  words  she's  saying.       a  heavy  sigh  slips  the  captain's  lips  as  he  gives  her  leg  a  little  squeeze.         a  sign  he  is  here  ;  that  he  is  grateful.

❛     on  your  left.     ❜        mile  two  had  been  funny.        hell  ,  even  three.       four  ,  five  ,  &*  six  ,  though  ?      if  they  hadn't  been  closer  together  in  comparison  to  the  first  three  ,  maybe.       but     …     given  he  was  running  faster  each  new  circuit  instead  of  slower  ,  like  any  regular  ,  normal  person  would  ?      it  has  to  be  grating.     HE'S  SHOWING  OFF.        just  pushing  himself  ,  if  you  asked  him  directly.    testing  the  limits  of  his  never-ending  stamina.       ❛    c'mon  ,  @vdcvc  –  you're  lagging  !    ❜       definitely  showing  off.

amusement  dances  on  the  super  soldiers  lips  as  they  cant  up  at  the  corners  ,  a  glance  of  baby  blues  given  before  he  looks  back  toward  the  television.      ❛     so  have  i.     but    …    i  don't  think  punching  the  reporter  is  a  good  call.     ❜        arms  cross  broad  chest  as  head  tilts  ,  a  moment  of  silence  given  as  he  listens  to  the  news.      bad  press  –  claims  that  the  avengers  are  nothing  more  than  unsanctioned  vigilantes  run  by  a  captain  that  is  out  of  his  depth.        a  fossil  –  a  stupid  one  ,  if  this  particular  reporter  is  to  taken  seriously.        𝐓𝐇𝐄  𝐆𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐒𝐓  𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒  𝐅𝐀𝐈𝐋𝐔𝐑𝐄.       okay  ,  that  one  stung  a  little.        ❛     —  can't  wait  to  hear  stark  rant  about  me  being  called  the  leader.    ❜

in the widow's presence, james finds a sense of comfort, a safety not so frequently found. oh, how easily she can find his heart beat just that much faster with a simple touch, a graze of her fingers through the short hair at the nape of his neck. a litter of kisses that accompany the drag of nails feel like the very creation of a constellation across the old soldier's skin, though its name he does not know yet. though james had awoken since the first minute of her quiet affections, he dares not move ——— he could very easily stay an eternity and a day in this position.

even still, with his indulgences aside, he turns towards her, silver eyes adjusting to the morning light. says nothing and studies her in committance to his memory, from how infrequent they are able to have moments of domesticity like this.

nose bumps to hers and a smile affixes itself to james's lips with no effort at all. “ don't stop. “

[ SCAR ]:          noticing a scar on the receiver’s skin, the sender tentatively stops them from covering it up, and rests a gentle, soft kiss over it.

             the  mangle  of  skin  where  arm  used  to  meet  shoulder  is  a  shredded,  red  mess  of  tissue  and  poorly  healed  sinew  giving  way  to  a  deadly  weapon  crafted  from  titanium  with  the  express  purpose  of  horrors.  it  is  not  something  he  enjoys  lingering  on  in  the  mirror  –  even  when  he  is  alone. 

             dark  eyes  find  her  too  late  and  although  it  is  a  surprise  he  keeps  his  expression  passive  and  cold  as  always.  hair  slicked  back,  away  from  his  eyes,  still  damp  from  the  shower,  he  began  to  tug  his  shirt  over  his  head.  ❝   thought  you  went  back,  маленькая  звёздочка  ❞  the  rumble  of  his  voice  is  tired  and  distant,  a  heaviness  in  the  dark  of  his  blues.  she  is  quicker  than  him,  always  has  been  –  lighter,  and  slight  framed.  before  the  fabric  of  his  shirt  could  be  tugged  down,  she  dipped  down  to  press  a  soft  kiss  to  the  ragged  skin  –  immediately,  it  dragged  a  shaky  breath  from  his  lungs.  chin  lifted  slightly  at  the  tenderness  of  the  gesture,  and  then  –  the  sensation  of  familiar  warm  lips  to  such  a  raw  place. 

             slowly,  he  turned  to  face  the  redhead,  hand  lifting  to  her  face,  ❝   natalia.   ❞  he  whispered  her  name  like  a  prayer  –  scars  for  forgotten  for  favor  of  her  mouth.  he  never  knew  what  to  do  with  gentleness.

               the  gentle  warmth  from  her  jacket  pales  in  comparison  to  the  sensation  of  her  scent  coiling  around  him  and  replacing  the  stinging  scent  of  rust  that  seemed  to  follow  wherever  he  went.  the  stench  of  blood  like  a  haunt  only  he  could  sense  –  but  now  there  was  this.  turning  to  look  up  at  her,  a  slow  smile  tugged  across  his  lips.  the  sight  of  her  chased  off  every  demon.  he  lifted  a  hand  toward  hers  and  guided  it  toward  his  mouth.  he  left  a  soft  kiss  to  the  back  of  her  fingers:  she  was  cold  too.  ❝   come  here.   ❞  they  were  like  two  crows:  perched  on  the  edge  of  a  building  in  some  tiny  corner  of  russia  –  bauhaus  architecture  giving  the  cityscape  a  sterile  appearance  amidst  the  snow  laden  trees.

          when  she  dropped  down  beside  him,  he  lifted  his  arm,  tugging  her  into  his  own  warmth  and  pressing  a  soft,  lingering  kiss  to  the  pink  of  her  cold-flushed  cheek.  ❝   when  we  are  free,  i  want  to  go  somewhere  warm.   ❞  he  spoke  of  far  away  dreams  in  tones  familiar  of  a  boy  he  would  never  be  again,  but  somehow  still  lived  deep  inside  of  him.  the  left  side  of  his  chest  ached  with  the  cold,  metal  cut  into  skin  and  muscle  trembled  under  the  weight.  ❝   and  we  will  have  a  fireplace  in  every  room.   ❞  smile  tore  into  a  grin,  allowing  a  flash  of  white  teeth  and  rumbling,  deep  laughter.

[ TOUCH ]:          while touching the receiver’s waist, the sender’s hand briefly dips beneath the hem of their shirt, skimming briefly across the bare skin of their waist.

                  the  guise  of  passivity  was  one  long  practiced.  natalia  had  managed  to  pierce  through  layers  of  cold,  stagnant  rage  now  molded  into  a  perfect  mask.  every  day  they  danced  closer  to  danger,  who  watched  patiently  for  one  of  them  to  slip.  the  point  of  no  return  crossed  countless  times—star  crossed  lovers  who  laughed  in  the  face  of  the  fates;  the  soldier  knew  the  risk  and  yet  he  gladly  fell  head  first  into  her  every  time. 

      motel  room  cloaked  in  darkness—they  couldn't  risk  the  light—with  paper  thin  walls  and  bedframe  that  surely  creaked,  winter  could  not  dream  up  a  better  place  if  he  tried.  left  arm  lifted,  metal  fingers  splayed  over  the  younger's  stomach  and  urged  her  into  backward  steps.  it  was  the  closest  they  could  come  to  dancing. 

          it  didn't  take  long  to  cross  the  room  and  the  soft  thud  of  her  shoulder's  hitting  the  wall  beside  the  window  replaced  the  silence.  free  hand  lifted  to  the  blinds,  with  a  quick  motion  they  closed,  leaving  them  in  further  darkness.  streetlights  snuck  between  the  slats  and  cast  him  in  even  lines  of  pale  white  light. 

             titanium  flashed  as  it  lifted  slowly  to  her  chin,  cold  metal  met  skin  and  the  soldier  tilted  her  face  more  toward  their  brief  allowance  of  light.  ❝   how  long  did  they  take  you  from  me?   ❞  their  cycle  was  endless.  like  prometheus  and  his  agony,  they  were  destined  and  starved  for  the  smallest  respites.   how  many  times  could  they  wipe  him  and  his  brain  still  cling  to  shreds  of  memory?
