Had a few engine problems :(
Won’t be black for much longer :)
✌️
Guess what we did today ✌️ sunshine and good mates, It’s not bare metal! Previous owner sprayed the whole car in satin black spray paint He regretted and I hated it! So here’s some advice/tutorial for anyone else with similar issues! (Also works if your car ever gets graffitied So for a very long time I’ve been pondering on and playing around with ideas... The goal was strip the spray paint without touching the original factory paint. As this car does look awesome in the original Metallic Silver! Not a common colour for the mk2 as I understand! However every method I was either suggested or tried was either too abrasive and damaging the factory coat and lacquer or too soft and wasn’t cutting the paint off So after finding out specifically which paint the previous owner used I started doing some google searching an figured out the paint was acrylic based as is most spray paint... And then I came across the beautiful solvent known as acetone! And acetone basically specifically attacks acrylic and near enough dissolves it. I eventually found that you can purchase 5L bottles of the stuff at Salon supply shops for use in nail studios to remove acrylic nails. So after dragging a mate along we got a few buckets and a bunch of cloths and got to work! Now it comes with its problems so if you’re gonna do anything like this be prepared. It’s not easy, you’ve got to wear gloves it does sting and burn your hands, just wash off with cold water and should be fine, it’s quite pungent so preferably do outside. It gets very... very messy. We found that it was moving the paint very easily within seconds of application but if it’s oversaturated then it will just move it about and then will dry quickly and just create big black smudges everywhere. We found the best way as to get a microfibre cloth slightly dampened on one side and work in small areas and keep going over the same spot until it’s completely off and no smudges. It’s took us at least about 6 hours and we’ve done probably 70% of the car now. It’s going to take time and effort! But it is a lot of fun seeing it transform! I’m mainly posting this because to find out this took me a long ass time! So hopefully this will save someone a few hours of googling! It’s beginning to look mint and I’ve just saved myself a heap of money as compared to a full respray! It’s not going to be absolutely flawless but it’s going to look rad! Any questions please ask! ^^
