This is a documentary made by a popular Russian journalist/blogger, it has English subtitles. Anyone who is interested in concepts like tyranny and oppression, human rights, intergenerational fear, Stalin and the Gulags, the Russian side of the Cold War and Space Race, and any other related topic should give it a try. The film forces us to face the uncomfortable truth about tyranny- it doesn't end with the death of the tyrant. More than half a century after Stalin, more than half a century after the horrific truth of the Stalin regime was revealed to Russians- he still rules in people's minds. Polls show that people tend to view him as a positive figure, and due to history erasure in schools, Russian youth are often unaware of Stalinist atrocities. So, if you don't give a shit about Russia, ask yourself this: Is there a government figure who you think does terrible, inhumane, atrocious things? It could be in your current country, or perhaps in another that you care about. Do you wish the people suffering under this person...well, weren't suffering? Does it shock you that people support the government figure in question? Do you want to do something about this dissonance? If the above applies to you, I recommend the documentary, even if you don't give a shit about Russia. ALSO, since this is tumblr- if you're one of those people that romanticizes communism and socialism, watch this, and maybe you'll understand why those of us who have families that suffered from those neat little concepts get so frustrated at your adamance on ignoring the hell that your neat little concepts bring.
