Opposing animal rights because human rights is still a work in progress is about the same as thinking, “I have the opportunity to feed a hungry dog however I, too, am hungry so that dog doesn’t deserve to eat until I can.”
Human rights are extremely important, but they should not override someone else’s right to basic living freedoms such as freedom from hunger, thirst, pain, fear, disease, and freedom to perform natural behaviours. We have the capability to achieve both of these at the same time. Punishing one group because another is also suffering is a concerning mindset that we need to put straight in the bin where it belongs, because it only furthers the idea that rights can be sectioned and are not broadly applicable to everyone.
