If you use classic literature to make a point, but you use it incorrectly, then you've not made the point. I see a lot of people call out others for being illiterate when it comes to classics and history, only to be illiterate themselves. If you use a classic book, poem, or historical event to make the narrative fit your world view...then you've not engaged with either the literature, subject, or your subjective point honestly.
