In memoriam of Vekerdy

My mother just texted me that one of my favorite hungarian psychologist, Vekerdy Tamás just passed away. I'm so sad, I almost ccouldn't even read the articles written about his death.

I always wanted to go to one of his lectures, I almost went once, but university stuff got in the way. Knowing that I will never meet him breakes my heart. He was such an inspirational figure in pedagogy and psychology in Hungary. At least for me and my friends.

So in one of the articles posted about him today there was a collection of a few of his thoughts about schooling and pedagogy and just in general and I thought I would share it to celebrate what he has done in his life. He didn't write for the "intellectuals", he wrote for EVERYONE. He helped parents and teachers at the same time.

In my opinion we all should think about these thoughts. I really recommend these to teachers, future teachers, parents and everyone interested in studying or pedagogy.

• We learn to forget. Most of the things we learn at high school we will forget. People in their twenties only remember 9% of what they learned at hugh school.

• Homework is unnecessary. Students will copy it, rush it or won't do it at all. Noone really learns while doing homework. Teaching should be done in classes, teachers should make their classes effective.

• Only the weak likes constant fighting. Only weak people cannot accept that they are not right, that other people are different. Strong people, leaders accept.

• Focusing on developing children is useless. Children learn in informal, non-formal ways, playing in the mud, falling, playing in general. Making them focus on papers and specific toys will do nothing. They all learn in their on pace. Make them play, make them enjoy life. Children who were forced to develop fast have problems in their life later. You can call it unnecessary pressuring in my opinion.

• Forcing people in communities only harm. Useful, effective communities are created by individuals, not vica versa. Forced communities are mostly fake and hypocrite.

• Extreme educating methods make deviants. It doesn't matter if it's the most liberal or the most conservative. Neither is perfect, neither is healthy. The most harmonic is in "the middle".

Szerinte a minisztériumban is sokan tudják ezt, de mindenkit lebénít a központi erőtér.

“A jelenlegi helyzet szánalmasságát mi sem jelzi jobban, mint az, hogy az egykor az SZDSZ oktatáspolitikáját keményen ostorozó pszichológus ma már úgy látja azok voltak az aranyidők.“

Meghalt Vekerdy Tamás

A hírt a pszichológus író családja közölte a hvg-vel.

Vekerdy Tamás 1935. szeptember 21-én született Budapesten.

Egyetemi tanulmányait az ELTE jogi karán folytatta, majd a BTK pszichológia szakát is elvégezte. 1983-tól az Országos Pedagógiai Intézet főmunkatársa volt. Tanított a Miskolci Egyetem neveléstudományi tanszékén, Solymáron a magyarországi Waldorf-óvoda és -iskola megszervezésében…
