happy au april friends! welcome to the first chapter of this (very self-indulgent) au. a huge thank you to @everythingvelcinta for putting this event together and motivating me to actually start writing this fic! sorry this prologue is so sad - i promise the whole fic won’t be this angsty!

Summary:

Seventeen years ago, the Empire destroyed the planet Alderaan - but Alderaan did not die in a day. Sixteen years ago, Cinta Kaz’s father built a ship and sent his only daughter away from their dying world in a last desperate hope to save her.

Now, Cinta spends her days flying above Coruscant, using the extraordinary powers gifted to her by Earth’s sun to help people wherever she can.

When a massive storm unearths a piece of her ship that sends out a signal intercepted by the Empire, it’s only a matter of time before the ones who destroyed her world and her people find her new home. Cinta must face her own past while struggling more and more to keep her secret identity safe from Vel Sartha—her co-worker at the Daily Star newspaper, and the woman she’s falling for, who’s getting closer and closer to the truth.

Excerpt:

It had been one standard year, three weeks, and five days since the Empire's horrendous machine—the Death Star—had reduced Alderaan to dust. Its lush emerald forests and crystal lakes; its towering, snow-capped mountains and winding canyons; all vaporized in an instant.

All except what was left of Cinta Damar-Kaz's home city, left floating on an asteroid in the endless abyss of space.

Thanks to her mother's quick thinking and work on shield generators, Agni Chyrr-Kaz was able to produce a protective bubble around Crevasse City. The atmosphere ray shield, and Crevasse's natural location in the depths of one of Alderaan's canyons, saved them from the initial planetary destruction.

In truth, it hadn't really saved them at all. Only prolonged their deaths.

The atmosphere shield around Crevasse was meant for just that—the atmosphere. It maintained their gravity and kept their breathable air intact. But it did nothing to stop the hail storm of radioactive kyber—birthed from Alderaan's remains—from penetrating it. Their city, built into the cliff sides of the canyon as it was, protected them from the acidic rain that fell unrelentingly for three days. But their stone city couldn't protect from the air itself. A green haze covered the city, swirling thick through cracks in their dwellings, choking the life from people and pets and plants alike.

Of the twenty-some thousand Crevasse City survivors, thirteen thousand were gone in the first couple weeks of Alderaan's destruction. Taken by the radiation. Cinta's mother among them.

She and her father had been there, at the bedside, in her mother's final moments.

Her father was on his knees to the right of her mother. Cinta mirrored him on the left. She wondered if he was praying to the Force, like she was, not to take her mother away.

But she knew, even then, not even the Force could stop her mother leaving.

"Agni." The way her father's wavering voice shaped the syllables of her mother's name—Cinta realized she'd been mistaken. Her father wasn't praying to the Force at all.

So she followed his example.

Knees digging into the stone floor, Mother's frail hand folded lightly between her own, she begged, "Mama, please don't go."

Her mother smiled. Though she was but a wisp of the flame she once was, she was still so beautiful. Cinta hoped to be as beautiful as her mother one day.

One day… if a day like that ever came.

She hadn't realized she'd started crying until her mother lifted a hand to her cheek and wiped the tears away.

"My darling," Mother whispered. "I'll never be far away. Look to the Force and you will find me there."

She wanted to say, what good was the Force if it takes you away from me when I need you most?

Her mother continued. "I will miss you, just as I know you will miss me. But I hope the day when the Force reunites us is a long time from now. Until then, can you do something for me?"

Cinta nodded.

Her mother lifted one of Cinta's hands to her mouth and placed a kiss to the back of it. "Be brave. There will be times when you feel scared or like the world is too big for you to face alone. But just remember that we love you, and if you are brave, you can face anything."

She tried to nod again but she was stuck in place, watching her mother's life fade before her. "I…"

"I love you, Cinta." Her mother's voice was a ghost of a whisper.

"I love you too, Mama. I—"

I promise to be brave. I promise I'll try.

The words caught in her throat.

Her mother wouldn't have heard them anyway.

Her body stilled. The last light from her shining eyes was gone.

It felt like losing Alderaan all over again.
