Velsao Parish Suffering From Homophobia ?
MARGAO: Local parishioners and those from Velsao clashed outside the Colva church on Saturday evening over allegations against a priest who had served in the Velsao parish.
Sources said the dispute began over a sermon given by a priest from Colva church in the Milagres Chapel in the fourth ward of Colva a few days ago where the priest allegedly spoke about the character of the former Velsao priest. Things turned sour as parishioners from Velsao were upset about the alleged remarks and accusations of alleged homosexual acts against the priest.
What angered locals from Velsao was the allegations were “baseless” and that they had proof about how the allegations were part of a conspiracy to malign the priest’s reputation. The locals said that the evidence had already been submitted to the archbishop and that the priest was in the process of getting his name cleared.
Sources stated that attempts had been made to malign the priest’s reputation because of his strict administration during his tenure as a priest in the Velsao parish.
Sources said that the Church had formed a fact-finding committee which was investigating allegations against the priest and that the parish priest of Colva, Fr Joseph Silva, was a member of the committee.
Sources said that when locals from Velsao heard about the allegations against the priest, they made arrangements via a bus and private vehicles to seek an audience with the Colva parish priest to ask why he had made such allegations.
Velsao locals alleged that someone deliberately misinformed a section of Colva locals that they were on their way to assault the Colva parish priest and this had led to the tussle.
What ensued was a clash between the groups of parishioners and things started getting out of hand.
Finally, the Colva police rushed to the site and brought the situation under control. Sources said the Church is now monitoring the situation
