R76 Advent: modern AU feat blind!Jack

Because this art by @velvvetcat09 is absolutely adorable and blind!Jack will forever be my jam. Gabe is a professor, and his ward-protege-son-type-thing Jesse wants to get him with the guy whose service dog he helps exercise twice a week.

It took Gabriel a whole half-hour before he finally worked up the nerve to approach the man -- and the first thing he proceeded to do was to shove his foot firmly into his mouth.

"Oh, you're blind?"

Jack's polite expression took on a decidedly strained note.

"Shit, I mean -- I didn't mean anything by that," Gabriel said hastily, waving his binder of ungraded essays around like a moron. Jesse had to have known, and he still hadn't said anything, just left Gabriel to make a fool of himself. The little brat said he'd been taking care of Soldier for nearly a month, the lively golden retriever 'just about as pretty as her owner'. He'd been wheedling Gabriel to come down to the park for the past week to meet the man, an Army vet named Jack, who sat on one of the benches and read while Jesse played with and exercised all of the dogs in his care.

Gabriel looked at the book in the man's lap, words of ink replaced with lines of raised dots, and mentally cursed the teenager rolling around on the ground and covered in dog drool on the other side of the park.

"You must be Gabe."

He blinked.

The tense set of Jack's mouth had softened into a smile. He turned his head in Gabriel's direction, eyes unfocused behind a pair of blue-tinted glasses, and patted the bench beside him.

"Jesse talks about you when he's waiting for the other owners to pick up their dogs. He keeps saying I ought to go take one of your classes, but I guess he finally gave up on my excuses and just brought you here instead. I'm Jack."

"Gabe," Gabriel replied, unnecessarily. Jack's smile curved up into a smirk, teasing but not unkind.

"Yeah, I figured that out. You gonna sit down?"

Gabriel sat. He laid the binder down next to him, pulling off his glasses for a moment to clean away an invisible smudge, avoiding the man's unseeing gaze. It felt almost impolite to stare at someone who couldn't look back -- especially when Gabriel was very keen on looking in the first place. (Jesse had not been wrong about Jack being attractive. Gabriel will never admit to it.)

"I'm not sure I want to know what he says about me," he admitted, giving up on the pretense that this wasn't a blatant attempt to set the two of them up. Christ, when was the last time he'd even been on a date? "I hope he didn't swear too much."

Jack laughed. His whole face brightened up with the action, his eyes crinkling at the corners, his mouth curved in an easy, open grin. Gabriel felt something catch in his chest at the sight.

Damn it.

Jesse was going to be insufferable.
