Villa Contarini in Asolo
Artist: Duncan Grant (Scottish, 1885-1978)
Date: 1955
Medium: Oil on board

Description
This work was painted in 1955 when Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell were staying at La Mura, a large house with extensive views built on the town walls of Asolo in the Veneto.
Perhaps the ravishing appetite of Satan, one of four zoomorphic camini mascherni designed by Giovan Battista Scultori, will rouse guests own hunger at Villa Della Torre, designed by the sculptor’s mentor and employer, architect Giulio Romano, in Fumane, Verona, in the 16th-century. This particular allegorical example was cast after one of the gaping gargoyle-esque grotesques in the Baroque 16th-century Bomarzo gardens.
