for the Canon Disabilities ask game:
a number of us were! i was missing an eye and an arm, Kazuhira wound up missing a leg, Quiet was mute, and Huey was a wheelchair user (but nobody likes Huey. not because of the wheelchair but because he was a massive asshole).
given we had shockingly advanced tech for the 80s, life could have been much worse. my depth perception was always a little fucked, but Ocelot went and got me a fancy replacement that worked a lot like an organic arm :] still couldn't feel anything with it though. which got annoying.
Kaz used crutches at first, but later got a prosthetic leg that he used more often. well, he used it at work anyway. whenever he was off-duty he'd go back to crutches because he said they were less irritating to use for long periods of time. on days where he was really exhausted, he'd opt for a wheelchair (which quickly made all of us realize how non ADA compliant the base was. in our defense Kaz did the designs thinking he wasn't going to end up in a wheelchair).
when Quiet came to base, i was pretty lucky to have some personnel who already knew ASL. it was my cue to start learning it too, and it actually wound up being surprisingly useful outside of talking to her. it made group missions a hell of a lot easier. it's funny playing The Phantom Pain now and wondering why that isn't an option. like brother there are more languages than spoken english on this planet. Quiet was rather talkative too, which makes it even more confusing.
Huey kind of did his own thing in his lab. he made himself an exoskeleton that he used outside of the lab. he was wicked smart, but man was he an awful guy.
