I have a medical condition called Vemous Malformation (VM) which causes tumors made of veins to grow in my knee. Over the last 4 years I’ve had 2 open surgeries and my third is on the way. However this condition is lifelong and I will continue to have procedures and surgeries on my knee for the rest of my life. 🩼

Doing art has become a great way for me to distract myself from daily chronic pain and has given me something to do while I cannot walk or do anything fun. I love drawing and creating things from my imagination and I hope that other people will love it too. 💜

I was wondering if I could as where yours is, and what kind of embolization agent your doctor uses for you? mine is in my ear and I'm having surgery to remove it in a few days, but I haven't had embolization before and I'm kind of nervous about it - what is it like after?

Hi, first of all I hope you dont mind me answering this publically, I just have a few people asking similar questions so I thought this answer may help other people. I am so open about my AVM and experiences now because I know how difficult it was for me to find people who had been through similar things because of how uncommon it is. I had another embolisation three and a half weeks ago and am recoveing from this still at the moment. This one they used pure ethanol, in the past they have used coils and other foam type agents. I must say the pure ethanol has been alot harder to bounce back from compared to the others. I always have pain after embo, like a flare up sort of pain. This time with the pure ethanol the pain is alot worse and longer lasting. I also get very tired for a number of weeks, which I think is a result of my body trying to sort itsself out and recover. I get skin numbness, followed by a sunburn feeling about two weeks later around the effected area (this was alot more evident for me in the pure alcohol one). I also get alot of bruising and swelling. Its nothing too terrible though, I take a couple of weeks off everything and stay at home. Then I slowly get back into things. Are you having a removal or an embolisation? Removal is when they surgically cut it out, where as the embo is using the different agents to clot the vessels to reduce blood flow. Sitting in the surgical waiting room at duke university hospital. Was just notified that they started the surgery. Nathan has has a lump on his back for years. Doctors had told him it was a benign lipoma, nothing to worry about, and never looked into it. It increased in size, and became more painful.. So he went to the er. They did a ct, sent him home. Not long later, they called him and told him they found something concerning, and he needs to come back asap for an mri. After a long time at mri, they told him he has what looks to be a very aggressive and rare cancer - a soft tissue sarcoma. He was referred to duke university. Two weeks ago, we meet with the surgeon.. He didn't sound AS convinced that it is definitely sarcoma. He mentioned the possibility of an aeterio-venous malformation. Which isn't a great thing to have, but would be much better news than "cancer". So, today, he is having surgery to have the tumor removed and have the official biopsy done. They should have done idea what it is today. Then they send it to the lab, and the final result of the mass biopsy can take 7-10 days. I'm so nervous at the moment. The surgeon is supposed to talk to me after the procedure. It should the between an hour and two hours. This man is my best friend, he's family to me.

I'm going to record the process of my next embolisation treatment and recovery so people who are scared of going through it have an idea of what's to come, and also to raise awareness to others about the condition and what we go through. It shall be interesting.
