when the spies are a family
Hi!! I’m looking for a post-mockingjay fic where it details the 15 years it takes to get Katniss to agree to a baby. I remember a specific scene where Peeta is painting in a shed and Katniss bursts through the door holding a dead turkey from a hunt and she says ‘yes’ finally. This sounds weird but I promise it’s in there somewhere!! Thank you!!

Hello! Thank you for setting up this zine! I understand you still have some things to outline (early days yet!) but I just had a couple of questions - when applications open on March 26th, will there be some information regarding what you need from us portfolios-wise? And also just wanted to double check that the theme was Hope. Thanks very much!
Absolutely, the applications do include instructions for artists and writers on what should be in their submissions. They’re fairly general guidelines, with the intent that everyone should feel free to shoot their shot if they want to. And yes, the guiding theme here is hope. Thanks for the interest!!
Do you think that post finale, when Rebecca ends up with whoever she ends up with (personally for me, it's Nathaniel), the other guys are bitter about it? Would they still go to each other's weddings and see each other's kids? Despite the guy trio not being as solid as the gurlgroup, I think I'd hope for them to have more in common than just Rebecca. Thanks! :)
Oh, it’s definitely Nathaniel in my head, too ;)
I would like to think that by the time Rebecca starts dating again, there won’t be any sourness with any of the guys either towards her or each other. There might be a little awkwardness at first, but I think after more than a year, they’ve had time to understand what they want, and while the other two will always have affection for her, there will also be perspective and nostalgia behind it. They all will have pretty busy lives, so none of them will be pining forever. Josh especially - even if he wasn’t already with Rosa, I think he would do the best at moving on without hard feelings. Nathaniel left town and spent the year in Guatemala, and having that distance probably helped a lot to put things in perspective, while Greg is running a restaurant, which is a full-time job and working on his own recovery.
One other big thing about the guy trio is that you can also factor in Hector and Whijo, and I think it would be really fun to see all five (six, counting Darryl sometimes) hanging out on a regular basis, especially since we know that Nathaniel gets along with Hector and is already friends with Whijo. So it wouldn’t just Rebecca’s love interests hanging out, but other friends together too, and having those extra people would serve as a good buffer between them if anything awkward came up. But the show definitely made it clear that they can hang out together and have fun - Josh/Greg with their history, Josh/Nathaniel with their sports and gentle ribbing, and Greg/Nathaniel with their shared gym time.
One of my pet headcanons currently is that there is a brief period of time where Josh and Greg see Nathaniel more regularly than they see each other, because baggage, while Nathaniel keeps trying to make Friendship Trio happen in earnest. But over time, Josh and Greg bury the hatchet and remember that they are childhood friends and reconnect properly, and then all three of them are able to hang out at Home Base or Il Cabino and just chill out together.
I am very much of the opinion that they all go to each other’s weddings (if only for the delightful shenanigans) and will be in and out of each other’s lives to some degree or another, even if they aren’t close friends themselves. I mean, if Valencia and Rebecca were able to become best friends with virtually no repercussions, these guys would only have their own lack of effort to blame.

some of these were so right! were you satisfied at the end?
Hey!
I was pretty pleased that some of these predictions did end up being confirmed throughout season 4. While some of my predictions didn’t end up happening, I feel like they usually addressed them in interesting ways. For example, the fact that Darryl and Whijo did not reunite—Whijo doesn’t want kids, which should be allowed to stand as a dealbreaker, and not only did Darryl find love, but we actually saw Whijo get together with someone new, someone who is an exception to his usual type, which suggests that he might try for a new kind of relationship that suits his own needs and wants in life.
Overall, I consider myself satisfied with the ending. I loved seeing the culmination of Rebecca learning to love herself, and Paula’s role in it, and how she interacted with the gentlemen in explaining her decision. I think they managed to walk that tightrope of having her end the series single without it sending implications about people with mental health struggles cannot be in a healthy relationship. The openness of that ending works for me - I love that shot of all the theoretically-eligible men in the room. More than that, I love that Rebecca has a room full of people who love and support her and are happy with themselves, as well.
Which, of course, doesn’t mean that I haven’t had criticisms/frustrations with the ending: I am not necessarily satisfied with how the show got certain characters to that point. This show has often prioritized theme and message over gradual character growth, and I think they do ask the audiences to make some pretty large leaps in logic to understand why the characters make very left-turn choices. Now, this doesn’t usually bother me too much—I just kind of expect it at this point, and usually I can follow along, or talk myself into them. But this has been difficult for me with Josh’s ending.
I’m happy that Josh is happy, and that he is in a healthy relationship with a new person, but if that was his intended destination, I don’t think they seeded it well. In the show itself, Josh struggles with a lack of direction, so my prediction was that his arc would culminate in him realizing what direction he wants to take his life into, and that the direction would take him out of his comfort zone: ergo, leaving West Covina. If Josh finding direction meant realizing that, ultimately, he doesn’t care where he works as long as he is with the people he cares about and loves—that’s fine. It wouldn’t be what I expected but it isn’t incongruous with his goals to develop more self-awareness and become a more active and equal participant in his relationships. But I think his character arc did get actively subsumed by the love quadrangle plot in an especially unfortunate way, given that in 4a, Josh was very focused on looking internally to understand himself and using therapy to observe and understand the reactions of the people around him, so I feel like losing that focus actively hurt his arc.
Now, that is what fic is for, and I still need to do a rewatch to see if I missed any seeds, but the fact that I am not satisfied with Josh’s ending makes me really sad. Especially since, when we had “No One Else Is Singing My Song” at the beginning of the season, led by Rebecca, Josh, and Nathaniel, I had been under the assumption that these three were going to have the most focus/undergo the most development for season 4. While I still think that is what was the intent, it also bothers me all the more that Josh’s landing didn’t stick while both Rebecca and Nathaniel’s landings did, because I wanted it to stick, and frankly, they needed it to stick. He’s the reason we all happen to be here, after all. I will be seeing if I can talk myself around it, but a week out it still doesn’t sit right for me.
In addition, I think that they really missed an opportunity for the Josh/Greg relationship. Given that a major source of tension in the love triangle for season 1 was Greg’s resentment of Josh and Josh’s lack of awareness at how he hurt Greg at times, they should have had the focus to hash things out. I also think it was a wasted opportunity to not have Greg, who does now have direction in his life, to not speak with Josh on this aspect, even if just to have Josh come to a realization that he wants his focus to be more integrated in his community and a more reliable person. I also have generally mixed feelings about Greg’s return – I loved Skylar in the role and I Hate Everything But You has legitimately become one of my favorite songs in the entire show – but his exit was very strong and I don’t think his return really had the same oomph. And none of this really gets into individual character decisions or plot points that I haven’t been especially fond of.
Basically, all of this to say that I wanted a still zany but ultimately quieter character study for everyone, which was not the intent of the writers. Which is fine! It just means that there is the usual tension between what the audience wants and what the writers wants, and I will still have fun analyzing what the show actually ended up doing and occasionally diverting from the canon as needed. And it doesn’t mean I hate what happened: while I disliked the concept of the love quadrangle, it was interesting in the narrative presenting these three love interests as good romantic partners, and playing up the meta element to make The Decision as outrageous as possible to telegraph that it is a false choice – that her chance at happiness isn’t defined by which guy she chooses but the work she does to find themselves. There is no ‘meant to be’ option –all of the guys were compatible, but all would have still been wrong without her finding happiness within herself. Even if I got annoyed, I do find it interesting when considering it as a whole.Of course, I am very much still processing everything, and opinions are always subject to change. But one thing I love about this show is that I feel like it really does encourage reprising and remixing, twisting things around to try to see character decisions in a new light and working to understand them. So I’ll be working on that.
And at the end of it all, I still feel like this was an ending that had more open possibilities than missed chances in where we can take the characters next, and I would count that as a success.
6, 17, 26, 30, and 31 for the crazy ex asks! :)
6. who do you ship rebecca with?
I completely shipped her with greg in season 1 but, as has been addressed within the show, their relationship at that time was Very Unhealthy, and his departure was perfect. even though I do like skylar’s portrayal I feel very lukewarm about them at the moment,,,, mostly because I saw this post which talked about jason as rebecca’s endgame partner and it completely won me over. but since it seems they actually only brought him back for one episode I will settle for whoever makes rebecca happy. I think the writers could do it with greg since their dynamic is actually healthy now, but at the same time a very core part of me wants rebecca to end the series single or with someone new (like jason!! bring jason back!! give him a chance!!)
17. who do you love that you never expected to?
most of the characters tbh!!! I disliked darryl, josh, valencia, paula and rebecca when they were first introduced. but it’s just a testament to the writers that they could turn these hugely unlikable stereotypes into fully fleshed out, wonderful characters who I would die for today
26. favorite belt song?
it’s a tie between You Stupid Bitch and After Everything I’ve Done For You/After Everything You Made Me Do - iconic songs!!
30. who has the best songs?
rebecca and paula, both individually, and in their duets
31. favorite running gag?
I don’t even know if this is meant as a gag but darryl’s baby being called hebecca is so hilarious, and so darryl, and it makes me wheeze every time someone says it. I also love that rebecca can only sing properly inside her head
thanks so much for the ask!! 💕
