something i love about preacher’s daughter is while the title reduces the character of ethel cain to her role as her father’s daughter and strips away the rest of her identity, the first line of the album ‘a mother is a very special thing’ and the last line ‘mama, just know that i love you, and i’ll see you when you get here’ centre around her relationship with her mother

Ethel Cain Universe Rant

If we ever get a film trilogy of Preacher's Daughter, Wife, and Mother, I need all of the women in their younger years to be played by the same actress like Mia Goth did in X and Pearl but said actress would need to do what Micheal Jordan did in Sinners and make them all their own people completely. This would be incredibly important imo for parallels between Ethel Cain Sr. and Ethel Cain Jr. because of how deeply tied both of them are to their religion. Vera is also undoubtedly intertwined, both through her own personal faith and through Joesph, but Ethel Sr. is believed to be the one who seals the fate of the Cain women, Ethel Jr. in particular. Ethel Jr. also ends up leaving her hometown to spread her religion which I imagine is not unlike Ethel Sr. when she started her Daughters of Cain cult. But the reason the actress for these women would need to be so versatile is because each of them is very different from the next from personalities to their relationship with the one man who connects them all: Joesph Cain. And because they are so different, the women all grow up to look completely unlike their younger selves, (prompting new actresses for them as they get older) doomed to watch the next generation repeat their mistakes yet somehow reach a different, yet equally terrible end, a hell crafted personally for them. I think this would have continued for who knows how long if Ethel Jr. hadn't broken the cycle so early on in her search for love. Their relationships with each other are also something that's so intriguing to me because going of the fandom wiki, very little is known about Ethel Sr. and Vera but there are clues as to what shapes their relationships with each other. Vera's page describes her as heavily religious, something that caused tension with her daughter and was amplified after Joseph died, possibly a catalyst for Ethel Jr. running away. But how does this affect Vera's view on her mother in law. Especially since she used to lead a cult, so how does Vera feel about that, how has that shaped her life even further? On the page of Preacher's Wife, Vera is described as a woman who does not think about God, (at least, in the context of her own album) and is more focused on things like the flaws in the relationship with her husband and why he neglects her, primarily sexually as Hayden explained in an interview. In Nettles, Ethel longs for the relationship she thinks her parents once had, with no emotional negligence and actual love. But because we don't fully know when Preacher's wife is going to take place and because we know so little about Vera herself, I doubt the narrative Ethel places upon her parents was ever truly real. Then there's the relationship of the two Ethel's. Does the elder know she has doomed her daughters? Was that her intention from the beginning? There's so much to be explored and so many cross roads to think about.
