I was in Venice to do a documentary series about over-tourism and you overhear tourists saying, without any irony, "there are too many tourists here..." As if they're different, as if they're special.
There's a kind of a status thing about tourists... we look down on other tourists. We're different, we're travelers. As Anthony Bourdain would say, "I'm a traveler, other people are tourists." Now, I totally understand that, but are we allowed to be so smug about other people? Are we so different?
