A&E’s original series Bates Motel gave viewers a front row seat on the roller coaster ride that is the story of Norman Bates, his mother Norma Bates and his brother Dylan. Viewers spent four seasons learning what happened to cause him to become the deranged character from the film “Psycho”.In the television series, Norman Bates is originally depicted as a sweet mild mannered character with a dark secret and a close bond with his mother Norma. Over the years, Norman began to lose all touch with reality bit by bit. Blackouts became fits of rage and soon “mother” was born. She became a coping mechanism for Norman when he could not truly face the reality of what he had done.
Season 5 opens with Norman coping with the loss of his mother by imagining a perfect life for himself. His mother Norma (who died from carbon monoxide poisoning in season four’s finale) is still alive. The Bates house is filled with sunlight and joy. Everything seems so peaceful and serene. However, viewers are reminded that Norma is indeed dead, once they get a glimpse of her body sitting perched on a chair,in the basement in a small room. Norman's blackouts have reached their apex and now loses a day instead of a few hours.
Mother is no longer content being in cruise control, she has taken the wheel.
