Vergado

Embers floating into the night sky before disappearing

Breathing in the dark

The edge of his boot isn’t even visible in the fog but he keeps pushing forward to where he last heard her voice. He should be close. Chest heaving as the last remnants of daylight sink into the horizon, he stumbles through darkness and fog. But he spots one single ember float into the night sky. It glows warm and bright like the hope blooming in his chest. Flickers, then fades against the backdrop of the blackest sea. Steadying his breath he runs.

And runs.

Then stumbles.

Sprawling against the ground, his boots are caught up in a tangle of something. He glances over his shoulder, attempting to catch his breath and the fog pulls back like a cruel curtain. Teal strands on a bloodied and charred body. It can’t be but he knows it is.

A cry of anguish rips through his chest and lashes out in grief against the sky.
