I just love this picture so I couldn't resist ♡
What do you think about the relationship between Mason and Margot? I mean besides being abusive lol
To me, it’s a symbiosis in a weird and perverted way. Margot’s whole existence revolves around Mason. Her sole skill is surviving him, adapting to new rules he establishes and searching for another absolute to call her last straw. Pushing the borders of “too much” every time and, again, adapting.
And as much as she hopes to escape or get rid of him, deep down she knows that he isn’t a parasitic twin. She is. Or, more precisely, they parasitize on each other – one cannot exist without the other.
Mason is the one who does business, but Margot is used to living in luxury. She doesn’t know or doesn’t want to know how luxury is earned. To her it’s easy to imagine herself running off with a child, the only way to kill Mason and get the family fortune, while in reality she would hardly survive a few days away from home. Because as terrible as it is, Mason is right: she’ll run back to him and his “care”, she was brought up to perceive herself as an appendage to her brother. He might as well literally be the reason she exists, since they’re twins. Had she been an elder or younger kid, who knows what wound their father have done.
I do feel sorry for her, nobody deserves to be abused, especially the way Mason abused her, and I don’t condone his actions. And yet, Margot is damaged, too. Dysfunctional, which makes her part of the family after all.
It’s simple with Mason: a sadist always depends on his victim. He keeps her by his side because he needs to dominate her, nobody else can give him the same pleasure of knowing he’s won. And then, he really believes he takes care of her, in his own way. He sees the broken parts of her and takes advantage, but at the same time keeps her away from “making mistakes”.
Even in the situation with Margot and Will’s baby, Mason knew she wouldn’t have survived away from home with a child of her hands (besides, of course, knowing that should this baby happen to be a boy, he’s done for). What he does is radical, but efficient. He removes the temptation. Because in his mind, she belongs to him, she is a part of his huge inheritance. An unfortunate, pathological sister to take care of.
It’s a relationship of codependency. That’s the way I see it. The funny thing is, when Mason is gone, his son becomes the pole of her existence – she’s still not getting anything, he is the heir. Her wife is the mother of her brother’s child. Even this way the presence of Mason remains. She clings to Alana and Morgan, because she’s not used to be on her own. She is not whole without her twin, and Mason is not whole without his. Margot wants something of her own, as it was with that baby, but she doesn’t realize that without Mason she has nothing. And she can have nothing. Her life is forever attached to his, from before their born to the end of her life.
And I believe that a sexual relationship (which is canon in the book), despite being non-consensual and abusive, fits them well. Depending on every level. It’s a terrible thing, but Margot adapts to it, too. Adapts to his needs. And at some point Mason changes his rules to “play consent or it’s going to be much worse”, so hypothetically it’s harder for her to blame everything on him. They share the blame. She acknowledges her own wrongness.
And that’s it. Mason loves his sister with a love you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. She tries very hard to hate him, but can’t battle the love and the habit of being chained to him. That’s pretty much their relationship in a nutshell.
