• so if I’m getting this straight, the Fitzpatrick’s wanted Felix dead, and Thumper works for the Fitzpatrick’s so they probably tell him to kill Felix. But the Fitzpatrick’s don’t want Thumper to go to jail since he works for them, so they have to blame Felix’s murder on someone else: Logan. Hannah’s dad is in deep with the Fitzpatrick’s so they make him call 911 and make up the story of how Logan stabbed Felix.

So in season two of Veronica Mars, the episode entitled "versatile toppings" the crime is someone is outing gay teens in Veronica's school. One of the suspects? Rick Santorum. No joke. How fitting is that.

Veronica Mars thoughts 2x14 Versatile Toppings

(This isn't going to be good. Heavy focus on observation, not so much on new analysis. And it's gonna be short. I'm tired, man. I'm tired.)

Veronica is kind of a step behind on this case, no?

It doesn't help that it's a multi-step case or that it was originally framed differently for her at the outset (that the pizza boy muggings were related to the Pirate S.H.I.P. blackmailing). But in the end, when she's figured everything out, I really can't tell why she doesn't logic through Kylie's motivations. Surprisingly, she doesn't seem to understand why she would out Marlena, can't get to why someone would be "a horrible, crazy bitch." Is it that she somehow has an automatically positive view of people and their intentions, because I haven't seen evidence of that. Quite the contrary, to be honest.

Maybe she gets this bizarrely relentless optimism from home, where we see it reflected by Keith's decision to take Terrence Cook's case on no grounds other than "You’re Terrence Cook. You wouldn’t kill a bus full of kids. I still believe that." But Keith has also learned cynicism, choosing not to go in to Lamb without blackmail material.

The Mars family hasn't been treated well by Neptune. Their doubts are justified. But not, as we see from Veronica's assumption that Kylie would make good choices, along with her decision to leave behind her dislike of Jackie, it's not a consistent pessimism. Which is good. Because that would make me sad.

(I did not anticipate how much this project would exhaust me. And school. School is exhausting. I have to go type far too much in a foreign language now. Which is unfortunate because I clearly cannot appropriately form English words.)
