the edge of the counter meets her hip in the most unpleasant way . the sound of papers fluttering replaces the second time she’s attempted to explain to him why she couldn’t share the information on documentation in her hand . she doesn’t know him well enough yet to know that her luck ran it’s coarse ; no is not an acceptable answer and certainly not the third time .
“ fuck . ” she mutters in pained breath , knees meeting hardwood and reaching for papers in front of her . three gathered , the fourth and the one in question lies between them . no sooner had stilettoed nails met paper and curled , that pressure meets her hand .
she ignore the action at first , hand moves under his boot only a fraction before movement is denied to her completely . pressure turns to faint pain , it’s not enough to injure her at least not yet . eyes fly up to meet him , a look she hadn’t seen before on his lips . there’s a smile there , sinister in every last drop and his eyes seem to tempt to her deny him again .
“ jacob you know -- ” a hiss interrupts denial , a hint of pain turns to needles , she can feel it radiating to her wrist , down her fingers , but she knows he’s controlling himself in calculated extent . he doesn’t let off even when he kneels down in front of her , as if he knows exactly how much she can take before he damages her ability to work . the needles turn to tingle now , coming from both sides as hand pushes into the floor .
three more seconds she meets his eyes before hand uncurls to relieve the ache , setting the document free of her grasp . it’s relent and resignation as she’s allowed to pull her hand back , not an utterance of resistance on her tongue . her eyes admit defeat , she had no intention of denying him again when his smile so clearly warns her against anymore more words not in his favor .
he could have broken her hand if he wanted and she saw it in his eyes . the flash of reminder that jacob had let her keep it ; despite her refusal . the throbbing would be a reminder the next few days that it had been by his own grace and his allowance that she could continue to work .
