See what I mean when I say that Sonic seems to put great importance of one's sense of identity? That said, he ain't a very inspired namer. Dr Robotnik - Dr Eggman, Emerald - Emerl, Chocolate Chipped Cream Sundae Supreme - Chip XP
"Do I need a reason to want to help out a friend?" That line. That one line. That is one of the absolutely integral parts of Sonic as a character - His kindness is innate. He doesn't need a reason to help or save people. He just does it because he wants to. No heroes code. No creed. Doing good is his natural state of being, something he doesn't see fit to boast about. Put shite like IDW Sonic out of your mind when it comes to seeing the core of Sonic as a character. Ignore that hypocritical principles zealot douchebag who sees fit to prattle on about his ideology and how "compassionate" he is.
Because THIS right here and Storybook Sonic and Adventure Sonic is all you need.

And that concludes Unleashed. Wow. What a game. So much of it reeks of passion. The creation of the Hedgehog Engine to handle lighting so that the day and night aesthetic looked even more gorgeous. The time that must've been spent designing day stages that can be 20km long. The level of worldbuilding with the collectibles and NPC dialogue. The fact that an 11 minute long animation was produced to promote it. And one ad spoofed Cloverfield. The orchestral music. The absolute brilliance of the opening.
To this day, It's still my favourite game in the series despite its foibles and half-assed Wii/PS2 version. I'm happy it's been vindicated by history to an extent.
This is why you don't fuck with Ivo Robotnik. The man can endure the pain of thumping on a solid wall of ice and endure it because he's so full of rage.
