Don't take this wrong, but couldn't Vertigo au happen in the normal canon? I just don't see what makes it a whole Alternative Universe
Don't worry, I understand your question, and it is that Vertigo au is not so thought of as an au at all, I like to consider it more like a fanfic, however I don't use Wattpad or AO3 much, so the best thing that occurred to me was to make it an AU!
Anyway, you can see Vertigo au as a fanfic and not an au, since it doesn't have that much change and, as you said yourself, it can be something that happens directly in the canon.
