A few shots here, a few beers there, a rum and coke, that shot of Goldschläger your friend bought you as a joke, a few large-ish nips out of that floating bottle of Jameson. Didn’t we agree that to never, ever going to mix alcohols again? Especially when we have somewhere to be in morning? Well, pop some ibuprofen and wobble your way to the kitchen, because we’re making anti-hangover juice!
Anti-Hangover Juice
Note: If you don’t have a juicer, this would work in the blender. The juice will come out a lot thicker, but the raw nutrients will still be there.
You will need
Seedless watermelon
Watermelon is a fun fruit to put into a juicer because it makes tons of hot-pink juice. And watermelon juice helps your poor, overworked kidneys process the toxins you drank last night, and it’s a diuretic, so you’ll be flushing out your hangover in no time. Use as much watermelon as you want—in this recipe, I used about a quarter of a large watermelon. You can get giant pre-cut wedges at the grocery store, too.
2 peeled limes
Citrus fruit = detoxifier for all your body’s cells. And along with the watermelon, lime juice is also going to help stabilize your blood sugar.
2 big handfuls of fresh mint leaves
Mint is an anti-nausea herb. Enough said. Not to mention the fresh smell, which is going to help wake you up, and guess what else mint does? It fights bloating. Hooray!
1 big handful of fresh parsley
Parsley is a detoxification wonder-herb that helps fight bloating and supports your kidneys, which are, let’s face it, kind of pissed at you right now.
Wash everything, then toss it all in your juicer or blender and hit the “on” button. If you’re blending, add a cup of filtered water to help liquefy your fruit.
The juice will be a deep pink color, tinged with green, and you’ll get about 30 ounces of juice if you use the same amount of watermelon I did. If you have leftovers, keep it in the fridge in an airtight container, and stir before drinking. But I don’t recommend saving this juice! Just drink as much of it as you can right now, and bring the rest to work.
Hair-of-the-dog types: I would be remiss in my duties as a hangover-healer if I did not take you aside and quietly inform you that this drink tastes delicious with a chilled shot of vodka in it. There.

New bars in Chicago: Reviews of new sports bars, lounges and pubs
New Chicago bars: Vertigo Sky Lounge, the rooftop bar atop the dana hotel, recently underwent a renovation.
Vertigo Sky Lounge
2 W Erie St, 312-202-6060, vertigoskylounge.com.
FIRST IMPRESSION Stunning. The outdoor patio of the redesigned Vertigo is no longer confusing itself with a miniature golf course—the owners have stripped the Astroturf in favor of a slatted-wood floor. Boxy benches with white padded seats surround a silver fire pit filled with clear rocks to give the illusion that the ice is aflame. A cityscape view from the 26th floor never hurts, either.
DRINKS As part of its redesign, Vertigo brags that it’s the only bar in Chicago to have a “Bartender’s Booth,” a barside spot where you can get off-menu food and drink. We spy said booth being used as a resting place for cardboard boxes. In any case, when/if the booth is open to guests, we hope the bartender staffing it isn’t the same one who forgets to put the pomegranate liqueur in our Pomegranate Sour. Other drink options include a lemon drop, a jalapeño margarita and something called the Peach Pussy Cat, made with bourbon, peach schnapps and Sierra Mist.
EATS An after-work menu features half-off sushi rolls from 4–7pm Monday through Friday. A measly five-piece salmon-avocado roll missing its advertised mango shows that you get what you pay for. A chicken sandwich with crispy prosciutto and creamy herbed goat cheese would be a winner except the meat is as dry as a British comedy.
SERVICE The pomegranate-less pomegranate drink takes about 10 minutes to get, even though we’re the only ones at the outdoor bar.
BRO OR NO? Old bro. This is probably a product of drinking here at 6:30pm on a Friday, an hour we pick because the website warns that bottle service reservations (starting at $200) get first priority and “not many people without reservations will get in after 8pm.” The monotonous club music playing indoors when we leave is likely a sign of what’s in store for the bottle-buying crowd.
THE TAB $43.68 for two cocktails, a (half-off) sushi roll and a sandwich.
