‘Patto’ 1970, Vertigo Records.
Formed in 1970 by some members of the psychedelic band ‘Timebox’ including lead singer Mike Patto. Quickly they were signed to Vertigo records. The band moved away from their psychedelic roots & towards progressive jazz-rock, as a few bands of the time were doing under the Vertigo label
The bands opening track ‘The Man’ is an effortlessly cool opening, which gives an insight into part of what’s to come but also you hear the restraint in Mikes voice because he is saving unleashing his superb vocals for later. For a four piece band there is so much going on here & it’s quite impressive. Drummer John Halsey seems to be the best at juggling between the genres on show. Ollie Halsall’s Guitars switch between blues & rock on tracks is not subtle, he churns it out very well like on ‘Red Glow’ were the Rock just takes over with Halsey’s drums staying with him the whole way.
Theres a great raw flow from Halsall’s guitar on The 10 minute ‘Money Bag’. Clive Griffiths beautiful Bass opening the song then turns, Clive changes to a jazz bass line with all instruments creating something different on this track compared to the rest of the album, it’s certainly more experimental, there’s more expression. Halsall unleashes nice rock riffs & solos until Mike Patto brings his smoky voice to the song which then changes the mood back to blues for a time before unique ending to the song.
There’s an almost unconscious fight between what there should be more of in terms of what genre takes over in certain songs, but that’s okay. There is nothing not to like here & is an interesting album, the pick for me is ‘Money Bag’. There’s a lot of creativity here, this is their best although I do like all their albums.
Unfortunately success didn’t follow after this album ‘Hold your fire’ 1971 was the last on Vertigo & with luck they were signed to Island records for 1972’s Roll ‘em smoke ‘em put another line out. Members left & Mile Patto disbanded Patto before ‘Monkeys bum’ 1973 could be released. The latter would be released in various formats from 1995-2017.
Maybe they were misunderstood? Or just not as likeable as I think they are? Who knows, I don’t, I’m not sure who the odd looking face coming through the window is on the gatefold or why? I guess I’ve never thought about it until now & I think that’s the point of Patto’s music, don’t over think it, just listen. One thing for sure is there can be no doubt about their musical abilities or Mike’s voice, watch them live it’s a treat.

Gentle giant
Self titled 1970
Ahhh Gentle Giant, technicality wise my favourite Progressive Rock band, so tight knit musically. Admittedly they are not to everyone’s taste, even I wasn’t sure about them at first but give them time & you may feel like I do for them.
Formed in 1970 & active till 1980 to me they accomplished so much in that decade. They tried to move with the times towards the end with more of a pop feel but they just didn’t have it in them, another problem was the ‘Punk craze’ & record & concert sales dwindled the bands latter outputs just weren’t anywhere near their earlier & mid quality. The band have various views for the split, Multi-instrumentalist Kerry Minnear states in 2000 the split wasn't because of punk, ‘it was because we had lost our way musically’. Whatever the reason the decision was right to call it a day.
Gentle Giants first attempt is a solid one, many thought there was an imbalance of styles on this record, that they tried too much at once, even if they did they did it better then anyone else. There are nice contrasts of other musical genres on show here like Blues, Soul, folk & Classical, even a little Jazz would be one that would become apparent as the they go on. With what’s on offer I think it all gels very well. One criticism I have is it all ends very quickly like their other albums, the bands longest album is something like just 39-40 minutes.
For me standout the standout songs are ‘Giant’ its a great opening & just shows what the band have on a progressive level. ‘Isn’t it quiet & cold’ sounds like it could be on a Kinks album & could sit right next to ‘Autumn Almanac’. All round a nice solid debut album they started as they meant to go on, most bands first attempts are confused & big changes come with the next release or a change stylistically, not with Gentle Giant they build on what’s here.
The album cover is also a memorable one the gatefold opens out nicely the front has the giants big head while the back has his body & the band in his hands. There were complaints about the quality of the record possibly the UK pressing but I can’t comment as I have the Italian pressing & it plays just fine.

May Blitz 1970
A band that had no commercial success & deserved so much more. Both of their albums really deserve as much recognition as they can possibly get today. A British-Canadian trio that played the pub circuit until they were picked up by Vertigo records.
The debut album clearly has roots in the start of ‘Heavy Rock’. ‘Smoking the day away’ the first song on the album is testament to the start of the ‘Heavy Rock’ statement with a fantastic simple riff that stays in your head long after listening to the album. The next track ‘I don’t know’ continues in much the same way but this time the ‘Blues’ kicks in, drums & Bass are utilised much better across this song than the first. ‘Fire Queen’ on the second side has such high energy, thudding drums & rumbling bass stay tight with Blacks solo attacks overhead. The vocals are fast sometimes high with screams that sound like an early Robert Plant, this is a nice attack on the ears. The Guitar solos are very impressive you get a great variation all the way through, they can be mean, piercing, fast & hard in places, on the lighter more ‘bluesy’ songs you have nice quick picking with long drawn out mellow cords.
It all has a very groovy tight sound I’m making it sound all over the shop but it’s not the psychedelic complements the heavy, the heavy complements the ‘Blues’. The drums & Bass both have their time to standout in each song no one or instrument is left behind. I like the fact it can go from Ambient to hard just like that, not knowing which way a song is going to go makes it’s all the more fun to listen to . I’ve heard people say it’s missing a Keyboard.... it’s not, it doesn’t need one, the whole dynamic of the album would have been changed. Even if it isn’t your thing you can’t say this album is boring. Jamie blacks vocals are on point across the album his voice switches nicely from rock to blues. It’s just frustrating because this three piece could do so much & were regrettably overlooked.
The Sleeve is a nice gatefold with an odd touch, a big Female Gorilla in underwear & hat. While others of the time were focusing on masterpiece album covers I think May Blitz deliberately did the opposite. Luckily we got another taste with their final attempt ‘2nd of May’ 1971 but that albums for another day, I’m yet to get it on vinyl, I want an original & the day I do I’ll review that as proudly as I did this one.

Vertigo Swirl.
This is a Vertigo swirl 1st Italian. Remember most Italian pressings are not gatefold unlike other countries. If like me you want all the original vertigo swirls & find some of the UK originals are out of your price range then look to European countries as they look & sound the same for the most part. They are usually a fraction of the price.
